john butler reviews

Postby bindy123 » Mon May 21, 2012 2:45 am

So yeah I am a John Butler Fan...for me to really like music I need to love the music itself...believe the message...and be inspired by the artist...who they are and how they live their life.

Besides John, Ben Harper and Eddie I dont have too many others that do it for me in all three areas...

Anyway you dont have to be a fan to have a say in this thread...I, or anyone else that wants to, will post some JBT performances...you can watch and give your review...

Music is so subjective so if you dont like it...say that...no offense taken...let me know what you really think

This is an instrumental tune called Oceans

Good to see some love for JB, an amazing artist.
I agree with you, Eddie, Ben and John, all very similar with where they are coming from with their music.
Check out the version of ocean from the max sessions at Sydney opera house 2004, one of the best things you will ever watch.

Thanks so much for the reply and info willc. I have seen a few versions but not the one you mentioned...he plays it differently every time...I can watch it over and over and over, and it blows my mind every time.

Here is the version you mentioned...and yes it is incredible...and its much shorter than the other in case anyone saw the length of the first version and decided they didnt have time to watch it all

His newest album "Tin Shed Tales" has been on heavy rotation since it was released...if you haven't listened to it yet...stop what you're doing now and go get it...lol.

Here's a great video of one of my fave songs by him:

ive only ever seen JB play festivals and what i love most is that he gets all the white boys up dancing. its fun to watch.
Now what we have to understand is that this comes from an extremely clever and skillful program, that has manipulated us into ways of thinking that may be contrary to our own interests, but beneficial to the interests of the powers that be... beneficial to the interests of those who control our lives, and tax us until we have hardly a penny left to spend, take our money, and plough it into the creation of huge, armed bureaucracies, which exist to oppress us. We live in a society today where we may not make decisions, to explore our own consciousness. If I am not sovereign over my own consciousness, then I am sovereign over nothing.

Bought an iPod many many years ago that came with free songs. One song just stunned me and I checked every Incubus album for it (it was a shuffle so I couldn't study track names/artists).

Then I figured out it was JBT, "What You Want." Remains one of my fav songs to this day, never been removed from the iPod Shuffle....

So I bought Sunrise Over Seas and just knocked me out, fantastic album. Loved his electrified acoustic sound, blending the mic'd acoustic sound with that Marshall amp back there, getting the feedback all blended in so sweet. Just an amazing sound. That's really what hooked me -- his layered guitar sound.

But his lyrics were awesome, the arrangements just stunning -- just great music. But he was always playing festivals in the Bay Area, shows I couldn't or wouldn't make the effort for, so it took me quite some time to catch him live, four years....

But soooo worth the wait, here's the review:

http://forums.pearljam.com/viewtopic.ph ... r#p3335361

Don't have his last 2 albums yet, the show boot is in constant rotation though, JBT should open for Pearl Jam! I've constantly put JBT down in the forums as "Bands I'd Recommend" around here. I'm surprised he and Eddie have never crossed paths, at least that's been talked about, so many common elements between them.

For that matter, don't have his first record either, Three. Just Sunrise and Grand National, but both are in heavy rotation. The new stuff (in 2010) didn't click with me as much as Sunrise, and at first I was bummed that he was changing up his bandmates so much -- some misguided internalization by me that "Oh, now he's big, he's ditching the folks that helped get him there!" But his explanations ring true, pick the right musicians for the right mood and what not -- and his old mates all had other projects they returned to.

Regardless of all that, he is a phenomenal live act -- all those years of busking I'd say, so comfortable and open and honest. Just a good, good soul, great vibe, definitely in that Jack Johnson mold of awareness, more so even. And a good dose of Marley, Matthews, Snoop!!! hehehe.

Hope he brings the Tin Shed to the States!

acutejam, man I am so sorry, I did go through a few pages of the forum to see if there was already another thread for JB...but obviously didnt check thoroughly enough...really loved reading your comments.

JBT opening for Pearl Jam would be so awesome...

John Butler used to play regularly at the Jetty Hotel near where I grew up back in the mid ninetees...it was like ten bucks to see him, I think even free a few times...he did a lot of instrumentals...even then he was incredible live...then he got big...it was so cool to see

even cooler to see his fame hasnt changed him even the slightest bit...and mckay, I will take your advice and get on to it today!

I'm also a big fan of JBT. Only had the privilege of seeing him once though. I'm yet to pick up tin shed tales but definitely intend to do so soon. Glad to see all the love

JBT is the shit. Just all around GOOD music- some seriously talented guys playing funky, fun music with a message. Saw them twice in 2010, opening for DMB, which I was really excited about as I wasn't able to see their NYC show earlier in the year and, of course, they were amazing! Hope to see them again.

Yeah you gotta get Three, its JBT's best album. Tin shed tales is pretty sweet too, just John solo, nice. Was lucky enough to score front row tix to his tin shed show here in Canberra, amazing gig, he's a funny dude too, good stories, like ed. Those two would make an awesome show.

Only stumbled on this song a few days ago and cant stop listening to it. The end of Johnnys Gone from April Uprising has an instrumental section at the end that I always loved but didnt understand how it fitted that song, now realise it is actually this song...no idea what the thinking behind that was...if anyone knows let me know...
