New Stone interview in Billboard

Step out on the porch to discuss Pearl Jam's music, tour, appearances, causes they support, etc. It's all about Pearl Jam here.

Nope, just the fact that they'd like to do a few more shows this year. It's just wishful thinking on the AV idea.

Just curious and I wanted to see what people's thoughts were on this:

If you break it down mathematically, ranging from TEN to Backspacer, the average span between albums is 2.25 years. I am taking into consideration that there was an extensive tour in 98, 2000, and the release of Riot Act in 2002. Even with all the touring, they found a way to record. I do not include writing in my thesis because I feel that Ed and the boys are always writing something (lyrically or musically) whether touring, on the road, at home, etc. Writing just comes to them.

With another extensive 2003 tour that lasted along time, a small VFC tour in 04, and a medium sized tour in 05 they still put out Lost Dogs and Rearviewmirror which was mostly new material granted a few songs.

So between Riot Act (Dec 02) and Pearl Jam (May 06) which was the longest between two studio albums, they still put of all of that "stuff."

Then 06 was a very large tour, 07 was 15 shows long and Into the Wild, and 08 was 13 shows and an Ed tour. From their last show in 08 to the release of Backspacer, that gave them 15 months. I am not sure when they first stepped into the studio for BS, but lets still say 15 months.

The toured the release of BS in 09 with a medium tour, then 2010 with a short U.S. tour and some festivals.

From there, Uke songs came out in May with an ED tour, and the next PJ event would be Alpine, Canada, and South America.

Now back to present day. Ed's hurt and pushes back solo tour, Brad is doing some shows, Mike is with Star Anna?

After all that analysis, when I should be writing a paper for finals, leads to one question. What is taking them so long to record? I have a few thoughts or quick reasons:

Not sure if everybody is married, but marriage
Kids
Side projects
Possibly older age?

The Stones are also my other favorite band and like PJ, am obsessed. The Stones had string of albums are linked right after each other. 67,68,69,71,72,73,74,76,78,80,81,83,86. Then after 86, Mick and Keith were always fighting and it looked as if the band was going to split. Mick, Keith, and Ron all had solo albums. The next 20 years they have slowed down. 89,94,97, and lastly 2005 was their last. *Also, when they do tours they can last up to 2 straight years.* Jokes aside, the Stones are 50 this year and I can see them for slowing down. They could have stopped 20 years ago if they wanted to, but they enjoy the music....back to PJ

That's my only old age reference I bring to the table for PJ.

Thoughts as to what is taking them so long?

The same people will be disappointed when the additional dates are announced.

My thought is they have their side projects that they enjoy more. It is probably natural after a band has been around to slow down after 20 years. I honestly believe that making a PJ record is pretty low on their priority list. Hopefully after the kids are grown the band will have a re-awakening and be like Bruce Springsteen who is at the top of his game still at 62.
