I'd go with Southern Rock Opera though, it's a great intro to Patterson/Cooley, who are the principal singers in the band and it's the album that brought them national attention. Jason Isbell was in for a few albums (Decoration Day, Dirty South, Blessing and a Curse) and his contributions are really strong too.

I really love everything about Southern Rock Opera. I like bits and pieces of stuff from the rest of their albums, but that one just floors me.
Recently caught A Secret to A Happy Ending and it gave alot of incite into their band dynamic and the history of the band. Hoping it jump starts a new wider appreciation for them.
