Gary Busey....a walking, talking PSA for helmet laws.

In a no-fault state, there is absolutely no reason a person who refuses to wear a seatbelt or a helmet should receive any coverage from their insurance company. Another person's choice to be needlessly reckless shouldn't impact other ratepayers. Having the freedom to act like an idiot should't cost the rest of society a dime.

I agree. Should insurance companies pay for someone that smoked for 20 years and develops lung cancer? The answer is yes.

Would you like your government to force you to go to bed every night at 8:00pm?

The answer to that question is....is there a danger or physical harm in the government forcing one to go to bed by 8:00pm?

If you want to kill yourself, fine, but dont make others pay for it.

I agree it amazes me how many children, teens and adults on a regular basis don't wear their seatbelts. if you value your teeth and life wear them.

not only that but in times of civil unrest.... riots etc they do have the power to enforce curfews

e.g.

In August 2008, the city of New Orleans instituted an emergency "dusk to dawn" curfew as Hurricane Gustav approached the Gulf Coast.

In September 2008, Houston instituted a midnight-to-6:00a.m. curfew as the city sought to clean up debris and repair power outages due to Hurricane Ike.

In April 1992, authorities in Los Angeles imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and deployed the National Guard to help quell city-wide civil disturbances, after the acquittal of LAPD officers involved in the beating of Rodney King.

and actually many states have state laws requiring curfew for many late night establishments

Yes good examples but is there a danger in the goverment implementing such a curfew? it appears they are trying to bring back some sort of social order in order to keep the citizenry out of harms way.

G and P

the bigger question to me isn't what they are attempting to do for our own goods (so glad we have them to tell us how to live safely), but rather "why" in regards to the arbitrary nature with which they base their decisions? it seems as though there is no rhyme or reason to them. I just have one comparison to make that illustrates my point...cigarettes and marijuana. When the rules are arbitrary it leads me to believe there are other reasons for the decisions.

There have been 3 fatalities involving people that work at my manufacturing plant in the last 6 years. None happened at work. All happened outside work. Wanna guess what was involved in each fatality? And these were 20-30 somethings.

they never cared before.

i went up to canada a few times on my motorcycle. the last time, some douche bag stole my helmet.

so on the way home...in canada i was yelled at by some motorcyclists...pulled over by the cops shortly after (showed them my police report from when i reported it.... they sent me on my way.). stopped for a snack before heading home...after snack...got yelled at by some other people in a car. they take that shit serious up there.

anyways, cross back into the states and cruise down I75 with no issues. pretty sure i passed a state trooper on teh way.

i don't know what the point is....that's right...michigan cops didn't care to begin with.

I normally don't like the government telling people what to do, but this is one of those cases where I think they need to--not because I care about some indiot who thinks he's too cool or tough to wear a helmet but because I'd hate to be the other driver in an accident involving someone on a motorcycle without a helmet. In revoking the law, did they also pass something protecting other drivers if there is an injury or fatality that could have been prevented by wearing a helmet? Did they pass something that requires the helmetless rider's insurance company to pay for the psychological treatment that driver might need after seeing the rider's head busted open because of an otherwise minor accident? That law may not have protected anyone else in a physical sense but it could have protected people in terms of criminal charges such as vehicular manslaughter and lawsuits due to injuries that otherwise would not have happened.
