My thought is that they suffered some physical or mental abuse related to religion in their past .......

I agree (though I can't say I'm an atheist as my cat would never forgive me). I agree with the sense of hypocrisy you allude to so I say let them keep their crosses, learn the concept of loving thy neighbor and get rid of the weaponry.

atheists don't "lack belief". They just don't believe what religious people believe. My wife once said this to me. "why does it bother you if you don't believe in anything?". I almost exploded in rage at the completely egotistical idea that just because someone is not christian that means they don't believe in anything.

your statement is quite ironic in that atheists don't believe hell exists.

what bothers me about your outrage is that if the tables were turned, and this was people honouring nazis killed in battle with a swastika flag, you'd be applauding the ones filing a lawsuit.
