I don't think this is a proper E Street album. From the liner notes:

Stevie Van Zandt only plays mandolin on one song
Nils Lofgren is not credited
Max Weinberg only drums on three tracks

I've only gotten into Springsteen in the last 5-6 years, so I'm no expert.

My vote goes for just ok.

Better than Working on a Dream, but not as good as any of his other E Street albums.

I was thinking the same thing. Better than WOAD but not as good as Magic.

"Land of Hope and Dreams" is slowly becoming one of my favorite Bruce songs. So damn good!

You're right. This is really a solo album with a few E streeters helping out on some songs. It's all semantics though...The important question is, 'is Wrecking Ball a good album in it's own right?' I think it is. I haven't heard the bonus tracks yet, but I really enjoy the main album. Not as good as many of his others, no doubt...but still a great work, IMO.

I'm really enjoying "wreking ball" right now. Think "Jack of all trades is my fave off it so far. only on track 8 right now though.

Interesting...thanks.

The album is definitely growing on me...like someone else said just because i have it ranked low in the Springsteen catalogue doesn't mean its a bad album.

So far i quite like Jack of All Trades, Death to my Hometown, Wrecking Ball and Land of Hope and Dreams.

What do you all think about Rocky Ground? It generated a lot of heat from some folks over at the Springsteen forums. I think it's a great song and the one rap verse didn't bother me at all. One of the better songs on the album, I think. The only problem I have with that song are the "I'm a Soldier" samples that keep repeating.

Highlights for me are:

Land of Hope and Dreams
Wrecking Ball
Death to Our Hometown
Rocky Ground
Honorable Mention: Jack of All Trades/We Are Alive

Only song I don't like that much on it is You've Got It. It just doesn't seem to fit the album...it sounds like a Promise outtake or something.

I'm digging the hell out of "swallowed up" (In the belly of a whale) Listened to it like 10-15x now.

some others are:

Easy money
jack of all trades
shackled and drawn
Death to my Hometown
wrecking ball
Rocky Ground
Land of hopes and dreams
we are alive

Pretty much the whole album. :D I was running into the same issue when trying to list my favorites.

This album is great. I love it. "Death to My Hometown" has a very noticeable militaristic feel to it, like something you would hear in a movie where they have a Revolutionary War/Civil War battle scene. That's what I get from listening to it. That and "Land of Hope and Dreams" are my top two favorites right now from the album.
My name is Chris.

yeah, I am really digging this album, even if it's not a full E Street record (not sure on that though). However, I love the passage, that Bruce wrote about Clarence, in the liner notes.Very moving and emotional.

So after a few listens I can honestly say I love this album. After every listen I have a new favorite song. It's a very different sounding album for Bruce...Imo....but it is great. And I don't know why some people on the Bruce fourms are not liking Rocky Ground....I love that tune.

Long live the Boss.....

I listened once and didn't like the record at all. I was very disappointed.

But I've since listened two more times and its growing on me. Instant faves for me:

Shackled and Drawn
Death To My Hometown
This Depression
Wrecking Ball
Rocky Ground (LOVE IT!)

And, I absolutely adore the proper studio version of American Land in the bonus tracks.
Well since Rock's baby left him,
He found a new place to dwell.
Well it's down at the end of Jabroni Drive at...Smackdown Hotel.
