Pearl Jam's lyrics are the first thing that made me love them.

Starting with

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why, why, why
Can't it be, can't it be mine

I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down

See the waves on distant shores,... Awaiting your arrival,...

If there’s no love

I’m gonna try to love again

I miss you already... I miss you always
I miss you already... I miss you all day
This is how I feel...
I miss you already... I miss you always
Three crooked hearts and swirls all around... I miss you all day

So if there were no angels, would there be no sin?
I'm like an opening band for the sun

All that's sacred, comes from youth

Troubled souls unite, we got ourselves tonight

Did I say that I need you?

Oh, Did I say that I want you?

Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see,..

No one know this more than me.

I will hold the candle, till it burns up my arm
I'll keep takin' punches, until their will grows tired
Oh I will stare the sun down, until my eyes go blind
Hey I won't change direction, and I won't change my mind

I'm so high the sky I scrape

He decides to dream...
Dream up a new self... for himself

If you're the only one, will I never be enough?
Hail, hail the lucky ones, I refer to those in love

Just be darling and I will be too
Faithful to you

And sometimes you're there
And you're talking back to me
Come the morning I could swear you're next to me

Is that the question
And if so...if so...who answers...who answers...

God I love that line for the beautiful image it evokes. The guitar part afterwards is sublime and gives me the feeling that I'm floating away!

He wishes he is not the moon but the moon's ethereal reflection. I picture the car parked in the woods. His eye catches that reflection. Maybe it's his lover's car. He's like the moon. He leaves and comes back, leaves and comes back ...

... which brings me back to the beginning of the song. This riff is like something I would have hummed as a kid on a swing. Back and forth, higher and higher.

Damn I agree! That line brought me to tears the first time I heard it, not because it's so "beautiful," necessarily, but because of the history it evokes for me, of being a young woman and free, just loving the night out in the country laying on the hood of a car, needing nothing but the moment...the full moon shining off a camaro's hood.

Honestly, it's made all the more beautiful when Ed compares it in short order to being "the grounds, the evidence for 50 million hands upraised and open toward the sky." The enormous and utterly public validation of millions of other humans, compared to the singular and ever so private validation of the moon shining on your car. Of being a small plastic object, "the chain you kept your housekeys on," and being a universal truth, "the verb 'to trust', and never let you down." I mean, shit. Thanks Ed.

All that's sacred, comes from youth
Dedication, naive and true
With no power, and fuckin' nothing to do
I still remember, why don't you...don't you...

So, as I always ask when I run into a Canadian PJ fan - are you also a big Our Lady Peace fan? (sometimes referred to as Canadian Pearl Jam)?

I would consider the tragically hip more of a "Canadian pearl jam" than our lady peace.

Just curious.

Mike

Not really, I haven't listened to them in years. They do have have a few good ones out there though, but not enough for me to refer to them as the Canadian Pearl Jam :)

"Whatever the notion we laced in our prayers, the man upstairs is used to all of this noise."

Incredibly well-written and poetic. And I love it when Ed puts in the F word when he sings it live; it actually has more meaning.

Totally agree! The entire words of this song are just so haunting and beautiful.. the constant wishing of wanting to be something more on so many scales..

I am getting "I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down" tattooed on myself, but am relating it back to never letting wanting to let myself down
"I wish I was the verb "to trust" and never let you down"
