God I love that line for the beautiful image it evokes. The guitar part afterwards is sublime and gives me the feeling that I'm floating away!
He wishes he is not the moon but the moon's ethereal reflection. I picture the car parked in the woods. His eye catches that reflection. Maybe it's his lover's car. He's like the moon. He leaves and comes back, leaves and comes back ...
... which brings me back to the beginning of the song. This riff is like something I would have hummed as a kid on a swing. Back and forth, higher and higher.

So, as I always ask when I run into a Canadian PJ fan - are you also a big Our Lady Peace fan? (sometimes referred to as Canadian Pearl Jam)?
I would consider the tragically hip more of a "Canadian pearl jam" than our lady peace.
Just curious.
Mike
Not really, I haven't listened to them in years. They do have have a few good ones out there though, but not enough for me to refer to them as the Canadian Pearl Jam

Oh and do I deserve to be?
Is that the Question
and if so... if so... who answers... who answers

Damn I agree! That line brought me to tears the first time I heard it, not because it's so "beautiful," necessarily, but because of the history it evokes for me, of being a young woman and free, just loving the night out in the country laying on the hood of a car, needing nothing but the moment...the full moon shining off a camaro's hood.
Honestly, it's made all the more beautiful when Ed compares it in short order to being "the grounds, the evidence for 50 million hands upraised and open toward the sky." The enormous and utterly public validation of millions of other humans, compared to the singular and ever so private validation of the moon shining on your car. Of being a small plastic object, "the chain you kept your housekeys on," and being a universal truth, "the verb 'to trust', and never let you down." I mean, shit. Thanks Ed.
