I'm either travelling up after work, or travelling up from London, depending on if a) I get the leave and b) if I get Tom Petty tickets. If I see Tom in London I may make the most of the day and get a late train to Manc as it's that much cheaper.

Those would be the dates that had previously been discussed, yes
I would try to fit a seatbelt, but they don't adhere well to plywood, and I doubt making a hole in the futon would increase night time comfort...
