I'm working on both Pearl Jam and Hip vinyl myself. Hip vinyl is so hard to find. I didn't even know there were vinyls past "Road Apples". My holy grail would definitely be "Day for Night". If you ever come across some you already have shoot me a pm. In the past three weeks I've managed to get No Code, Lo2L, Yield, and PJ20 but no Hip in sight. I'm in Canada too, well Newfoundland .... lol

Vinyl pressings exist for all albums from the Hip EP to Trouble at the Henhouse, plus Live Between Us (and We Are the Same). The Hip EP and Up to Here are easier to track down than the others. I got lucky with Fully Completely, I freely admit. It is extremely hard to find, and when you do find it, more often than not you'll have to shell out a small fortune to get it.

The record I want to get my hands on the most from what's left on my list is Day for Night. There seems to be more copies of it around than Fully Completely, going by how many have been posted on the bay lately. And you'd think that being in Canada would help our cause, but it doesn't seem to be the case. All of my Hip vinyl purchases have come from outside of Canada, so I think of it as bringing them back home where they belong. ;)

I was once like you but gave up. I have S/T, Up to Here and Road Apples but could never bring myself to splurge on Fully Completely or Day for Night.

Just so you know, there is a DFN up on ebay right now - bids are up to $122.

The Tragically Hip album Road Apples on vinyl is an interesting beast. It apparently has four pressings: The (supposedly sonically-inferior) German pressing, a US sterling pressing, a regular Canadian pressing, and a Limited Edition Canadian pressing.

Within the span of a day, I was able to get my hands on both the German and regular Canadian pressings for pretty decent prices. I learned that there are a few differences between the two. The German one first:

Image
The bottom-right corner of the German cover.

Image
The upper-right corner of the German cover.

Image
The second side of the German LP. (Can you spot the amusing spelling mistake? :D)

And now the Canadian one:

The Canadian pressing does not have a barcode anywhere on the cover, oddly enough, so no picture of that.

Image
The Canadian pressing was distributed by Columbia House records. Reading that brought back distant childhood memories of thumbing through my old man's Columbia House catalog. Too bad I didn't have the foresight to purchase this album back then. :)

Image
Note the rainbow MCA label, and the different catalog number: CMCA-10173.

Interesting stuff. I never would have known the differences had I not had the two versions side-by-side. Oh, and Road Apples sounds absolutely amazing on vinyl, probably the best of the Hip albums in my collection.

I hope you got that "Trouble..." disc. I'm trying to finish my PJ studio collection first. But then will be finishing my Hip stuff. If you ever get a handle on a spare Day for Night,I'd love to hear from you. Anyway, congrats on the collection . I sure hope you're spinning the heck outta them.

Hey does that Canadian pressing of Road Apples really sound better?

Re: ISO: Tragically Hip vinyl (got sealed TATH!!!)

BUMP for the sealed TATH!

So, the $1,000,000 question (quite literally) is: Do I...

1. Open it and spin it?
2. Offer it up to trade for an opened copy plus credit towards another Hip record I need?
3. Leave it exactly how it is and cherish it?

The thing is, the cover is not in mint condition, as you can see from the pictures. There is a corner bend, a slight bit of ringwear, and a minor spine fold.

For reference to those who are not up on the situation with Tragically Hip vinyl, this is essentially the equivalent of a Benny in terms of rarity (maybe more so), but only about half as much in terms of current value.

Ahhhh, I'm so torn over what to do! If it was any other record I'd open it and spin it until the needle wears through the vinyl, but it's so, SO rare opened, never mind sealed.

What should I do?

Just so I'm clear, I would be looking to move my sealed TATH because I really don't want to open it, and someone might appreciate a sealed copy more than me. So this is what I would accept for it (whether or not it's fair is another matter that is open for discussion ;) ):

1. My sealed TATH for an opened TATH whose vinyl is in EX or better condition AND some credit towards a Live Between Us or Day For Night (preferably DFN).
2. My sealed TATH (+ some cash?) for an opened DFN AND opened LBU, both vinyl in EX or better condition.

I would much prefer #1 just because I want to end up with a TATH in some way, shape or form. If you want to talk more specifically, then send me a PM and we can go from there.

I received a Day for Night Sealed from a member of 10C in a trade for Mad Season.
I opened it!
Sounds Amazing!
You should do the same it's yours now.
I found a Up to Here for $30 at my local record store.

Enjoy!!

I think I'm going to leave it as-is for the time being. I just got back from an adventure in Europe, and I brought enough vinyl home from there to satisfy me for now (some rare-ish '90s Neil Young, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, and Tom Petty).

I made a post over on the Hip forum to see if any collectors there want it, so we'll see what happens. But for now I'm content to have it sit sealed amongst my other Hip records. :)

I opened sealed copies of both TAtH AND DFN & have no real regrets. You should rip that baby open, turn your stereo to '11' and spin that thing 'till it hurts! I do know how hard it is to open a sealed Hip album but my gut tells me the Hip will reissue those albums before too long. There is just too much demand for them not to.

Sorry DRIVET I wasn't able to hook you up with the sealed DFN I sold here. Like I said, it at least did go to a cool cat, a fellow Albertan 10c'er

Now, if you guys wanna talk REAL rare Canadian albums, try finding Wintersleep's first 2 albums on vinyl (self titled and un-titled). Those baby's were holy grails for me and I eventually gave up a German 'Road Apples' and STP's "Purple" for those two Wintersleep albums and felt quite happy with that trade (the 1st album was pressed on cyrstal clear vinyl). Snatch 'em if you fins 'em - they are GREAT albums AND very rare. The fella from NewFoundland might have the best luck as Wintersleep is from Halifax I think. I'd also be interested in any Rheostatics albums on vinyl although I'm not sure how many exist in that form (they reissued a gorgeous vinyl-version of 'Whale Music', which included the CD, from their website - what an awesome job they did on it! - and I have their "Greatest Hits" from '87 on vinyl. Really not sure what else, if any, of their albums made it to vinyl)
