So those Olympic gold medals in hockey are meaningless to you? ;)

I don't have a problem saying 'Canada rules at hockey'...but I would never just say 'Canada rules'....:)

Not to discount the rest of this earth, but yes, I do believe it is.

This country HAS been awesome, is teetering somewhat at the moment, but can return to its former awesomeness. Some kinks need to be worked out first, I think.

I love the freedom here to not only succeed, but also to fail (the latter usually HAS to happen in order for the former to). And, after failing, still having the opportunity to try again - and not with the "everyone's a winner!" mentality because let's face it, everyone is not.

The US, to me, is about liberty. Providing it, living it. Many in my family came here hopeful about their new wide-open future and the right to live their lives free of restraint of thought, religion, sexuality.

This is a magnificent land made up of some magnificent people. From all over.

I love it.

As long as you're a straight christian.

I do dig this country, but come on.

I was thinking the same thing. The U.S. is a great place in many ways. But it's like the rest of the world- it has good people and not so good people. It has places I love seeing and places I don't care to see again.

I guess I'm more of a community or planetary kind of person- macro or micro. I don't understand political boundaries. Geographic boundaries make more sense. Regional makes more sense to me. If it weren't for political boundaries, unless you're crossing a river or an ocean or you come across another tribe, you would never know you're going from one state or country into another.

Community makes more sense to me than state or nation.

I do dig this country, but come on.

That strikes me as unfair and somewhat narrowly-viewed.

My family isn't Christian and one side is middle-eastern. Pretty diverse, actually, on all fronts. They've not only been welcomed by their countrymen, but helped them out as well.

So, I see your "come on" and raise you a "really"?

Perhaps, and that's great to hear. Life is much easier in this country for a white, straight christian than it is for many others. Your family's story is great and is probably what the majority experiences but to say you can live your life free of restraint, especially when it comes to sexuality, I think is a hell of a stretch.

Edit: And don't get me wrong,as I said in the beginning, I am a fan of this country.

that is good advice in any case.

I only know the US as a tourist, but yes, it's awesome and I want to go back & see more of it. has its ups and downs like any place in the world...some of the downs are great topics to make fun of, some are pretty sad, which also goes for most countries.

Why is it only Americans that feel the need to say things like this?
