One of the greatest bands ever imo and today (on what would have been Layne's 38th birthday) Meddledeal and I thought it was long overdue to resurrect this thread of praise.

Alice In Chains- this is a sound truely all it's own. Heavy, dark, crunchy, infectious and incredibly soulful. Like the band, Layne's voice remains to this day untouchable and in a league all it's own. The pain and emotion behind this haunted voice could send shivers down anyone's spine. This is a voice that demanded to be heard, demanded to be felt. Layne had the power to move you. The power to connect every single word straight to your heart and soul. I remember the first time I heard Facelift, I was completely floored. It was one of the most ass kickin, original pieces of art I had ever heard. Then DIRT....come on?!?! How could ANYONE possibly deny this classic?!!? Jar Of Flies....the band proving they are all about quality as opposed to quantity. Only 7 songs long but the chilling, intoxicating album had enough power, emotion and intensity many full length albums could only dream of possessing. Absolutely gorgeous!!!

Like pretty much all of my fav bands, AIC chose to deliver their gift to us all wrapped in many different packages. Every single album offering a sound, style and feel all it's own.

The Unplugged performance is still one of the most emotional AIC experieces out there imo. While the band sounds absolutely beautiful, the pain in Layne's voice is undeniable. To actually WATCH that and see the man wasting away right before your very eyes?!?! Wow. Really, really painfull. Never fails to move me to tears. Perhaps that's why to this day these Unplugged versions are some of the most heartfelt versions of many greats. Completely stripped down (even more than before), haunted and dark (even more than before)....everything about AIC, the good the bad (both of which made them so great) were definitely exaggerated on Unplugged and it makes for one hell of an heartbreakingly beautiful, insanely powerful show.

I think Jerry and Layne were one of the greatest duos out there. These 2 harmonizing is straight up heaven on earth. They complimented each other in such an amazing, perfect way.

Fact is Mike Starr/MIKE INEZ, Sean Kinney, Jerry Cantrell and the legendary Layne all did their part in creating what I feel to be one the GREATEST bands EVER.

It's about time we all SHOW OUR AIC LOVE!!!

{{RIP LAYNE}} Happy Birthday~ a day we are all grateful for.
A spirit, voice, passion and presence that is very much missed. Thank you for all that you gave. All of your greatness lives on through the ass kickin, soulful music you left behind. This will live on forever. I hope you are in a better, peaceful, pain-free place now. :)

Kick off the thread with one of my absolute fav songs from the mighty band (and one that makes me miss the man even more.)

Also kick it off with an incredible site made by a friend of mine and Meddle's. Please go check it out....

http://www.laynethelegend.com/

Which reminds me, hey VIGGS20....didn't you post a Layne tribute on the old "Show your AIC love" thread?? Set to Nutshell?? I swear you did. Please feel free to post that again buddy!

(( DON'T FOLLOW ))

Hey, I ain’t never coming
Home
Hey, I’ll just wander my
Own road
Hey, I can’t meet you here tomorrow
Say goodbye don’t follow
Misery so hollow

Hey you, you’re livin’
Life full throttle
Hey you, pass me down that
Bottle, yeah
Hey you, you can’t shake
Me round now
I get so lost and don’t
Know how
And it hurts to care, i’m
Going down

Forgot my woman, lost my
Friends
Thinks I’d done and where
I’ve been
Sleep in sweat the mirrors
Cold
See my face it’s growin’
Old
Scared to death no reason
Why
Do whatever to get me by
Think about the things i
Said
Read the page it’s cold
And dead

Take me home

I love them so...I said this once and I will say it again...

What a band. So much talent just seeping through through each members veins that it was nearly suffocating to the listener. They were a deeply impacting band, that had such a sense of harsh reality, it was almost heartbreaking.

What with Layne's drug addiction that he wanted to kill so badly, yet lost...the music created was a force like none other. Layne's raw, emotion ridden vocals, Jerry's wailing guitar, almost as if the tears were pouring from the heart itself, Mike's haunting bass lines, and Sean's unique, powerful drumming.

It is pure amazement how the chemistry between this band and the music created by them, is still just as beautifully tragic as it was those many years back. With them making masterpieces such as Facelift, Dirt, and Jar of Flies, and then hearing them Unplugged, which is utterly undescribable. They are still immortalized to this day, idolized by many. Their songs spoke of self battles, over come, or never won, all extremely beautiful, yet speak of such an ugly reality.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
They were so pure..honest..innocent. The passing of Layne had its impacts, truly saddening as much as others..one of the best bands to ever grace this planet. The song I heard..that impacted me so and made me fall so hard for this band was Down In A Hole. So beautiful it is..They will be in my thoughts.
Down In A Hole
Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers
In a tomb...in bloom
Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it like a grave
You don't understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
Who won't let himself be
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
I'd like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied
Down in a hole and they've put all
The stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty
Of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more
of my feelings beneath
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
I'd like to fly but my
Wings have been so denied
Bury me softly in this womb
Oh I want to be inside of you
I give this part of me for you
Oh I want to be inside of you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers
Oh I want to be inside of you
In a tomb...in bloom
Oh I want to be inside...
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, outta control
I'd like to fly but my
Wings have been so denied
AiC remains my second favorite band (behind PJ) of all time. Really, there's a huge drop off behind PJ and AiC in my love for any other bands. AiC isn't all that far from PJ on the list....and all the things you mentioned above are perfectly stated. He has that ability to reach in and grab your soul and pull it down to the depths of nothingness like no other singer.
Also as you mentioned, I can't watch the Unplugged tape without tearing up...especially during Nutshell. To listen to him sing words that are SO true for him...is just surreal. It's just like listening to "Wake Up" (Mad Season). We all had so much hope for a soul that felt no hope...and never truly understood what hope really was. In the Rolling Stone he interviewed in, he said he realized he didn't want to die young and wouldn't...if only he was able to fulfill that dream.
I miss this band and Layne more and more as the years go on. They'll never be forgotten.
RIP Layne...and happy birthday.
Ooooooh AMEN!!! Very nicely said reachdown12. I could not agree more. The band was indeed tragic. This is one obvious, out of this world case where music making was truely an art form, a healing form, a incredibly needed release. It did make for hauntingly real, super honest music. Jerry's guitar....tears pouring! :o Love it. It's so true. Jerry really did compliment every single emotion behind Layne's voice and powerful words with that guitar of his. The chemistry in AIC was definitely one of a kind. It's this chemistry that added to such powerful music. These guys brought it all out in the open, the tragedy, the pain.....they had the power to take all of these dark, horrorific things and create something beautiful out of them. :o
Long live AIC!!
Awww man, do I feel ya on DOWN IN A HOLE. That's the Unplugged performance that really gets me. :( This song just tears me apart. You gotta be heartless not to feel that! Sooooo much damn emotion. Hurts. :(
I just got chills reading that. Yeah I know Nothingbetter. it really is insane!! Him singing these words that are dead on true to him, witnessing him falling apart RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE and pratically confirming it with each song. It is surreal. It's a lot to take in. :( It's beyond sad that he didn't get to fullfill that dream.
We all had so much hope for a soul that felt no hope...and never truly understood what hope really was.
Great ideo tybird! Ed wants in on the AIC/Layne praise too.
What a song!! I definitely feel it.......
> 4/20/02 <
so all you fools
who sing just like him
feel free to do so now
cuz he's dead
using, using, using
the using takes toll
isolation
just so happy to be one
sad to, sad to think
sad to think of him more
lonesome friend, we all knew
always hoped you'd pull through
no blame, no blame
no blame, it could be you
using, you can't grow old using
so sing just like him, fuckers
it won't offend him
just me
because he's dead
I LOVE Tripod too!! I agree, it is underrated/appreciated...but imo so is this band as a whole. ;) Oooo, also loooooove SAP...RIGHT TURN with Chris Cornell!?!? :o :o :o
I was just getting the praise and love-fest started though. I couldn't pick apart every album or my response would have been even longer. :p We have the whole thread to spread that love. The point is to post about AIC ...any and everything that you love about them....so post away about Tri-pod DaytimeDilemma. :)
I'll kick it off with one of my favs all around from the band (looks around for Kaddikat). I fuckin LOVE this video too.....
{| GRIND |}
In the darkest hole, you’d be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies, yeah
Come the morning light, it’s a see through show
What you may have heard and what you think you know, yeah
Let the sun never blind your eyes
Let me sleep so my teeth don’t grind
Hear a sound from a voice inside
Sure to play a part, so you love the game
And in truth your lies become one and same, yeah
I could set you free, rather hear the sound
Of your body breaking as I take you down, yeah
Let the sun never blind your eyes
Let me sleep so my teeth don’t grind
Hear a sound from a voice inside
In the darkest hole, you’d be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies, yeah
Let the sun never blind your eyes
Jeez i know, unplugged version..along with other memorables from that night..purely..saddening. I agree, you have got to be heartless not to feel that performance. No one can compare to Layne, all of those who go on imitating his vocals..never will be the same. There was only one Layne.
And your starting post by the way, gorgeous. You are dead on as well. Everything said, beautiful. All so true, emotions and all...
i love this band...what more can u say?...they were simply great...in Layney's honour i'll post the lyrics from my favourite AIC song:
I stay away
Yeah, I want to travel south
This year
Aaah, Woah, Woah
Won't prevent safe passage here
Why you act crazy
Not an act maybe
So close a lady
Shifty eyes shade
Yeah, hey Yeah, tears that soak
A callous heart
Why you act frightened
I am enlightened
Your weakness builds me
So someday you'll see
I stay away
I cannot even begin to state my appreciation for SAP. The song I heard first, Right Turn, still leaves me searching for the rest of that album. Those songs, purely memorable, but the duet with Chris..amazing combination.
Right Turn
Inside always trying to get back inside
But it's so hard to penetrate pig-thick skin
I'm 'bout as low as I can get
I'd leave but I can't forget
Still I wonder why it ain't right, mmm it ain't right, oooh
Ain't right, mmm it ain't right, yeah
'Bout as low as she can get
She'll leave me but she won't forget
And she wonders why she ain't right, she ain't right
Ain't right, she ain't right
Now we're as low as we can get
Can't leave and can't forget
We ain't right, we ain't right
Not right, we ain't right
Well it's hard to believe that somebody tricked you
when you can see you were only high
It's all up to you so you gamble
flat on your face and into the fire
Shame In You
When I waken, and I'm achin', time for sleepin', yeah
When I'm sayin' time to go and, I've been hurtin', yeah
When I'm layin, I'm still tryin', concentrating on dyin', yeah
You're right as rain, but you're all to blame
Agreed my crime's the same
My sins I'll claim, give you back shed pain
Go find a place for own shame
So you can deal with this thing unreal
No one made you feel any hurt, yeah
Body's movin, only provin, no one needs to move
Still believin, yet mistaken, all God's children, yeah
And I must say, I was stupid, selfishly she consumed, yeah
And you must change patterns all we trained
Or n'er regain peace you seek
Now you hear me, for the things I see
Yeah, I believe in inner peace, yeah
Throw out, blow up, hold in
Show fine, no signs, grow blind
Junkhead
A Good Night, The Best In A Long Time
A New Friend Turned Me On To An Old Favorite
Nothing BetterThan A Dealer Who's High
Be High, Concince Them To Buy
What's My Drug Of Choice?
Well, What Have You Got?
I Don't Go Broke
And I Do It Alot
Seems So Sick To The Hypocrite Norm
Running Their Boring Drills
But We Are An Elite Race Of Our Own
Money, Status, Nothing To Me
Awww thanks for your kind words reachdown12. It's beautiful what this passionate band can bring out in us all. Yeah really, Unplugged is just utter sadness....part of what makes it so untouchable and beautiful though for sure.
RIGHT TURN?!!? :eek: :o So glad you feel me on that. Double WOW! CHRIS along with these mighty voices?! *chills* Shit! Almost too much to handle right there! It does not get any better.
Junkhead is an amazing song! Dirt is so......dirty. So many chunky, fierce ass kickin songs with such fitting raw emotion. Looove it!
BUMP it up with another fav from that motherload album. Very haunting/eery/fitting too that the day of his vigil it WAS infact raining. The sky was crying. :(
:: -RAIN WHEN I DIE- ::
Is she ready to know my frustration?
What she slippin’ inside, slow castration
I’m a riddle so strong, you can’t break me
Did she come here to try, try to take me
Did she call my name?
I think it’s gonna rain
When I die
Was it something I said, held against me?
Ain’t no life on the run, slowly climbing
Caught in ice so she stares, stares at nothing
I can help her but won’t, now she hates me
She won’t let me hide
She don’t want me to cry
Will she keep on the ground, trying to ground me
Slowly forgive my lie, lying to save me
Could she love me again, or will she hate me
Prob’ly not, I know why, can’t explain me
I would like to venture back into the facelift days..that album..so raw, and amazing. My favorite song off that album is hard to say, as that album is amazingly rocking from the first riff to the last, but the one song that sticks out, is Love, Hate, Love. What a phenomenal song! Jeez, the vocals, the lyrics, the guitar, the slow, haunting, ryhthm that creeps up on you and explodes..love it. Great album, great song.
Love, Hate, Love
I tried to love you I thought I could
I tried to own you I thought I would
I want to peel the skin from your face
Before the real you lays to waste
You told me I'm the only one
Sweet little angel you should have run
Lying, crying, dying to leave
Innocence creates my hell
Cheating myself still you know more
It would be so easy with a whore
Try to understand me little girl
My twisted passion to be your world
Lost inside my sick head
I live for you but I'm not alive
Take my hand before I kill
I still love you, but, I still burn
Yeah, Love, hate, love
Oooh, Love, hate, love
Yeah, Love, hate, love
AWESOME pick reachdown12. You're the best! :D
I LOVE Facelift with a passion. It really is so hard to pick a favorite album when it comes to this band but I will say this one has a very, very special place in my rockin heart. :) I defintiely find myself overly obsessed with CONFUSION , IT AIN'T LIKE THAT & I KNOW SOMETHING (BOUT YOU) to name a few. The album is indeed sooooo raw. It's a punch to the face for sure...lifts that shit WAY up. haha. Wtf? I don't know, it's an ass kick I sure enjoy though. :D
GREAT to see all this love guys! Let's keep it coming strong.
alice in chains is one of those bands that must have formed when the planets were perfectly aligned. i'll never stop listening to this band.
Sludge Factory
You insult me in my home, you’re forgiven this time
Things go well, your eyes dilate, you shake, and I’m high?
Look in my eyes deep and watch the clouds change with time
20 hours won’t print my picture milk carton size
Carton size, carton size
Call me up congratulations ain’t the real why
There’s no pressure besides brilliance let’s say by day 9
Endless corporate ignorance lets me control time
By the way, by the way, by the way
Once again you see an in, discolored skin gives you away
So afraid you kindly gurgle, out a date for me
Now the body of one soul I adore wants to die
You have always told me you’d not live past 25
I say stay long enough to repay all who cause strife
Once again you see an in, discolored skin gives you away
So afraid you kindly gurgle, out a date for me (2x)
’i bear true and an existing witness
To this barrel of monkeys.
A self proclaimed immoral success,
Perfected by each whereof
Individually deadly and equally so
And spread about the surrendered troops,
For even thousands of miles will not
Tear apart their communication, or the lack thereof.
Vultures, liars, thieves, each proclaim their innocence
In no suggestion or rhyme, your weapon is contained in
The wrecking of the keeping the desired effect.
The breaking of the spirit thwarts the whole being.
Your weapon is guilt, your weapon is guilt, your weapon is guilt.
Guilt.’
Great thread VEDHEAD27. I love AIC and was deeply saddened when I found out that Layne died. Where I live, the local radio station played a good bit of AIC today as a tribute. It didn't compare to the tribute that they and Layne deserve. Loved all their albums and only wish I could have seen them live (I hear that they kicked major ass in concert).
Such greatness going on here...for a band that damn well deserves it!
Kaddik, glad you came by. **HUGAS** back at you. ;) hehe. I know you share this undying passion for the mighty AIC. This voice truely does hit you like no other. The power and painfully real emotion here is indeed unmatched. And what a beautiful song you chose to post. That one is sooooo gorgeous. The layers on that song totally take me away. :o The way it just oozes into you. Whoooa! Puts me in a complete trance.
MoonlightDrive81, another awsome pick (I mean can you really go wrong with this band? :p )!! I love the Unplugged version of that one more than anything!
markymark550, thanks bud! Glad you feel the love as well. I hear ya...I sooooo wish I coulda seen them live as well. :( I was oh so close. They were scheduled to open for Metalllica but cancelled last minute, literally hours before the show cuze Layne was having "problems" and was in the hospital. One of his many close calls. :( Sooo, sooo close.
A local radio station here today did a little tribute too...that's actually what prompted me to finally resurrect this thread. So much sadness surrounds this band, but at the same time that really, really is something that makes you feel the impact of their greatness even more.
<~~~ listening to Unplugged (ANGRY CHAIR)
Is this not the greatest version ever?!?! :eek: Daaaaaamn!!!! I cannot stop listening to this song! Serious repeat-mode over here.
This intro is seriously one of the most badass fuckin things I have EVER heard!!!!!! God, the twang and echo of these strings?! Eh! These voices?! This stretched out, rockin, funky, bluesy, heavenly ringing solo that just lifts you off the planet!! :o All this acoustic and super crystal clear is such a gift from above. Woooooooow AIC! Wooooow. :o Magic captured and then some.
THANK YOU!
^^ANGRY CHAIR ^^
Sitting on an angry chair
Angry walls that steal the air
Stomach hurts and I don’t care
What do I see across the way
See myself molded in clay
Stares at me, yeah I’m afraid
Changing the shape of his face
Candles red I have a pair
Shadows dancing everywhere
Burning on the angry chair
Little boy made a mistake
Pink cloud has now turned to gray
All that I want is to play
Get on your knees, time to pray, boy
I don’t mind, yeah
I don’t mind, i-i-i
I don’t mind, yeah,
I don’t mind, i-i-i
Lost my mind, yeah
But I don’t mind, i-i-i
Can’t find it anywhere
I don’t mind
Corporate prison, we stay
I’m a dull boy, work all da y
So I’m strung out anyway
Loneliness is not a phase
Field of pain is where I graze
Serenity is far away
Saw my reflection and cried
So little hope that I died
Feed me your lies, open wide
Weight of my heart, not the size
Pink cloud has now turned to gray
All that I want is to play
Get on your knees time to pray
Also as you mentioned, I can't watch the Unplugged tape without tearing up...especially during Nutshell. To listen to him sing words that are SO true for him...is just surreal. It's just like listening to "Wake Up" (Mad Season). We all had so much hope for a soul that felt no hope...and never truly understood what hope really was. In the Rolling Stone he interviewed in, he said he realized he didn't want to die young and wouldn't...if only he was able to fulfill that dream.
I miss this band and Layne more and more as the years go on. They'll never be forgotten.
RIP Layne...and happy birthday.
Dude, I'm totally the same way. Alice in Chains is right behind Pearl Jam in my catalog, and those 2 bands are untouchable.
Layne had a lot of trouble with his addiction, and with his girlfriend, Demri. As much as I love all of their work, I think that their last album "Alice in Chains" also referred to as "Tripod" is their best work. It's their darkest and richest collection of songs that the band ever put out. Dirt was classic, but Tripod is what I think really defined who Alice in Chains is and was and will be seen as in future years to come.
oh YES, we were going to resurrect this thread, and it FINALLY happened!! :D Thanks Lydi for doing that, b/c I know we were talking about it for hella long!
I was listening to LIVE105 today, and man, i just got so teary eyed when the DJ, Ally, was talking about the history of Alice In Chains, and then how rumors started that Layne was secluded in his apt. that he had been using drugs and his teeth rotted. :( It was just so tragic, hearing how he died, ALONE, and on the same day as Kurt Cobain:( I almost started crying when I heard that, even though I remember reading about it 3 years ago.
I love AIC...this band, I got into when I was a teen back in South Texas, I had NO idea how the hell I got a hold of one (since we only had shitty radio stations, mostly top 40 back home), it was probably when I made my monthly trips to San Antonio w/my brother (since they had the coolest rock station KISS 99.5), that is how it started. This sound was AMAZING and Jerry and Layne's voices mixed so well together. It is so beautiful that you can't even explain.
This band helped me through my teen years, hell, I think I was the only one in my class who was listening to AIC back when I was 14 or 15, and listening to DIRT every night whenever I needed to rest. I put my headphones on, and let the music flow through in my head.:)
It saddens me that people are itimiating Layne, I mean, find your own voices and stop making $ of it him. I loved it how Eddie wrote that song b/c it is so true.
Happy B-day Layne:( RIP, we miss you.
Here is one of my favorite songs from AIC
~GOT ME WRONG~
Yeh, it goes away
All of this and more of nothing in my life
No color clay
Individuality not safe
As of now I bet you got me wrong
So unsure you run from something strong
I can’t let go
Threadbare tapestry unwinding slow
Feel a tortured brain
Show your belly like you want me to
As of now I bet you got me wrong
So unsure you run from something strong
I haven’t felt like this in so long
Wrong, in a sense too far gone from love
That don’t last forever
Something’s gotta turn out right
You sugar taste
Sweetness doesn’t often touch my face
Stay if you please
You may not be here when I leave
As of now I bet you got me wrong
So unsure we reach for something strong
I haven’t felt like this in so long
Wrong, in a sense too far gone from love
Strong, I haven’t felt like this in so long
Wrong, in a sense too far gone from love
T hat don’t last forever
Something’s gotta turn out right
No Excuses
It's alright
There comes a time
Got no patience to search
For peace of mind
Layin' low
Want to take it slow
No more hiding or
Disguising truths I've sold
Everyday it's something
Hits me all so cold
Find me sittin' by myself
No excuses, then I know
It's okay
Had a bad day
Hands are bruised from
Breaking rocks all day
Drained and blue
I bleed for you
You think it's funny, well
You're drowning in it too
Yeah, it's fine
We'll walk down the line
Leave our rain, a cold
Trade for warm sunshine
You my friend
I will defend
And if we change, well I
Love you anyway...
Need I say more? Yeah, WE DIE YOUNG!
Scary's on the wall
Scary's on he's way
Watch where you spit
I'd advise you wait until it's over
Then you got hit
And you shoulda known better
And we die young
Faster we run
Down, down, down you're rollin'
Watch the blood float in the muddy sewer
Take another hit
And bury your brother
And we die young
Faster we run
Scary's on the wall
Scary's on he's way
Another alley trip
Bullet seek the place to bend you over
Then you got hit
And you shoulda known better
Faster we run
And we die young
RIP ~ Layne Staley ~ you will always live through your wonderful music you left with us and you will never, ever be forgotten!
Nutshell
We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...
My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead
If you love AiC, I challenge you to watch Layne sing this on the Unplugged CD and not at least get a lump in your throat. It can't be done for anyone that loves them...TRULY loves them.
Shame In You
When I waken, and I'm achin', time for sleepin', yeah
When I'm sayin' time to go and, I've been hurtin', yeah
When I'm layin, I'm still tryin', concentrating on dyin', yeah
You're right as rain, but you're all to blame
Agreed my crime's the same
My sins I'll claim, give you back shed pain
Go find a place for own shame
So you can deal with this thing unreal
No one made you feel any hurt, yeah
Body's movin, only provin, no one needs to move
Still believin, yet mistaken, all God's children, yeah
And I must say, I was stupid, selfishly she consumed, yeah
And you must change patterns all we trained
Or n'er regain peace you seek
Now you hear me, for the things I see
Yeah, I believe in inner peace, yeah
Throw out, blow up, hold in
Show fine, no signs, grow blind
Beautiful choice...this is my fave AIC song of all time!!! :)
(( DON'T FOLLOW ))
Hey, I ain’t never coming
Home
Hey, I’ll just wander my
Own road
Hey, I can’t meet you here tomorrow
Say goodbye don’t follow
Misery so hollow
Hey you, you’re livin’
Life full throttle
Hey you, pass me down that
Bottle, yeah
Hey you, you can’t shake
Me round now
I get so lost and don’t
Know how
And it hurts to care, i’m
Going down
Forgot my woman, lost my
Friends
Thinks I’d done and where
I’ve been
Sleep in sweat the mirrors
Cold
See my face it’s growin’
Old
Scared to death no reason
Why
Do whatever to get me by
Think about the things i
Said
Read the page it’s cold
And dead
Take me home
I've mentioned it in other threads, I'll mention it again.
Seeing AIC for the first time set me on a different path. I was at a Warrant & Danger Danger concert 10/24/1989 and they opened. I stood there in fucking awe, jaw dropped. It was absolutely amazing. I'm so glad I got to see them a couple more times. Layne was such a powerful singer, like nothing I've ever seen.
It's so funny. My friend and I used to have people ask, "How come such nice girls like you are listening to such angry music?" We'd just give 'em a snarly little smile.
Facelift is one my all time favorite albums. I don't see that the VHS tape of their Moore Theater show that was released with that CD is on DVD. It should be.
It's rare that bands can do that any more, huh? Rarely can you go to a concert with a band you've never heard before and just come out of there in amazement...and an instant fan. The only band to do such recently was Blonde Redhead, for me.
Pansy Pearl...you saw them live?!? :eek: Lucky, super blessed girl! *bows down* haha. That is so damn cool. Leaving you completely motionless huh? Wow. I bet. :o And you're so right, Layne was indeed incredibly powerful with that voice and all that emotion that oozed from it. A voice like no other!! Sooo fuckin unique on so many levels (just like AIC).
hehe. Love it. :D ;)
Ah and I totally know what you mean Nothingbetter (about your last few posts). Unplugged -all around- is one hell of a painfull, intense, emotional ride. Again, to see this man just barely existent, hanging on by a thread...it's a morbid sight to see, dressed in black- matching the circles under those tired eyes...struggling to stay on queue, to stay awake, to stay alive. It's heart wrenching. :( A song like Nutshell rings so true to him and even more so during this performance. Putting this god-awful image with these gorgeous, emotional, honest, way too fitting lyrics leaves a lump in my throat and then some. Very difficult to watch.
Meddledeal and I watched Music Bank last night. We both fought back the tears but we couldnt help it during OVER NOW Unplugged (yet another one with those fitting lyrics. Ouch!) We had to skip Down In A Hole cuze it's just too damn much too handle sometimes. I'm sure you all understand. :(
I have spent a great deal of time praising Layne (naturally ;) ) but I really, REALLY wanna make sure to stress what an absolute pimp I think Jerry is. This man is a-mazing! Let's say it together now.....m-u-s-i-c-a-l genius! Yet another out of control, unstoppable talent. The things he does with this guitar?!? These dark, beautiful, super catchy melodies?! These harmonies!? The way he makes these strings bend, as if to stretch out and exaggerate the already intense emotion behind every single frickin word. The way makes the guitar ring, sing, weep! Woooow!! And as if that gorgeous voice of his guitar ain't enough, the man opens up his mouth and heaven is beside you indeed!!! AMEN! Hallejullah! :p Everytime Meddledeal and I watch Music Bank we can't help but praise away. This man kicks major ass. Don't you just looooooooove the THEM BONES \m/ vid where he's playing the guitar holding that shit straight up and down ( looks like he's holding it up on display) just shredding away!!! Getting some dual solo action in there too. Fuckin incredible!!! Love how the wind starts blowing in his hair...right before he shreds into oblivion. haha. I can just hear the angels singing. :D Loooove it!
Jerry and Layne definitely both shine sooooo damn bright on their own...but together....together?!? MAGIC! They really do compliment each other in such a beautiful, perfect way. The way they harmonize makes my heart melt. This is one song that succeeds in that every damn time......
<~~~ listening to BROTHER Unplugged
(soooo hooked on this song! I can't ever listen to it just once :o )
*screams from the highest mountain top*
I LOOOOOOOOOVE THIS SONG! Love, love, LOOOOOOVE this band! :)
{\BROTHER/}
Frozen in the place I hide
Not afraid to paint my sky with
Some who say I’ve lost my mind
Brother try and hope to find
You were always so far away
I know that pain so don’t you run away
Like you used to do
Roses in a vase of white
Bloodied by the thorns beside the leaves
That fall because my hand is
Pulling them hard as I can
You were always so far away
I know that pain and I won’t run away
Like I used to do
Pictures in a box at home
Yellowing and green with mold
So I can barely see your face
Wonder how that color taste
You were always so far away
I know the way so don’t you run away
Like you used to do
Like you used to do
Last night was a beautiful night just watching Music Bank dvd w/VEDHEAD27, truly amazing!! Just seeing the footage of the band (and a healthy lanye:() you just can't help it but go "awww"
And watching the videos...HOT DAMN!! :eek: Jerry and Layne in the Grind video....so beautiful! And their harmonies together is very magicial...not one to be replicated EVER!! That is what was SO special about AIC-the combination vocals of both Jerry and Layne. Grind is a FINE example of that...Layne's dark vocals mixed in w/Jerry's harmony...truly beautiful!! And that video, I am sorry to go off on that video, but how fitting is that that at the end of the video, the whole band is in heaven, and Layne is wearing a white suit...that, to me, is one of my favorite videos of all time!! :D
But how could we forget this song, SICKMAN! One of my favorites when I was 14, and still is!! LOVE Layne's voice in this song, when he goes "WHAT THE HELL AM I? THOUSAND EYES, A FLY" :)
*SICKMAN*
What the hell am i?
Thousand eyes, a fly
Lucky then I’d be
In one day deceased
Sickman, sickman, sickman
I can feel the wheel, but I can’t steer
When my thoughts become my biggest fear
Ah, what’s the difference, I’ll die
In this sick world of mine
What the hell am i?
Leper from inside
Inside wall of peace
Dirty and diseased
Sickman, sickman, sickman, sickman
I can see the end is getting near
I won’t rest until my head is clear
Ah, what’s the difference, I’ll die
In this sick world of mine
Can you see the end?
Choke on me my friend
Must to drown these thoughts
Purity over rot
(spoken in backround)
Yeah, though I walk through the valley of rape and despair
With head high and eyes alert
I tread on a plane of many
We who are of good nature and intention,
But cannot touch on the dark
Recesses of memory
And pain learned, so come walk
With me, feel the pain,
And release it...
What the hell am i?
Worn eroded pride
Saddened 10 miles wide
I’m gonna let it slide
Sickman, sickman, sickman, sickman
I can feel the wheel, but I can’t steer
When my thoughts become my biggest fear
Ah, what’s the difference, I’ll die
In this sick world of mine
Ahh, etc., etc.
It's a band called "Downface". Go on their site and you'll see the song. I discovered this a few months ago. Great song, but it's not Eddie or Layne.
My favorite song off of Facelift would probably be "Bleed the Freak":
My cup runneth over
Like blood from a stone
[CHORUS]
These stand for me
Name your god and bleed the freak
I like to see
How you all would bleed for me
When the pig runs slower
Let the arrow fly
When the sin lies bolder
I'll pluck out thine eye
[CHORUS]
If you scorn my lover
Satan got your thigh
If you steal in hunger
I will kick you when you try
[CHORUS]
•SEA OF SORROW•
Mind, of destructive taste
I choose...to stroll amongst the waste
That was your heart
Lost in the dark
Call off the chase
Walls of thought, strong and high
As my castle crumbles with time...
I think of you
Oh, yes I do
Such a crime
You opened fire...and your mark was true
You opened fire...aim my smilin' skull at you
You opened fire...
I live tomorrow, you I'll not follow
As you wallow in a sea of sorrow
Lines cut across my face
Why you laugh at my disgrace
I'll never know
How far to go
To reach that place
You opened fire...and your mark was true
You opened fire...aim my smilin' skull at you
You opened fire...
I live tomorrow, you I'll not follow
As you wallow in a sea of sorrow
Vedhead, thanks for giving this thread a well deserved bump! I will state once more that this band was nothing short of amazing at what they did. And no matter how many people attempt to copy or imitate this band, they will not succeed in doing so..AIC is one of a kind. Long live AIC!:D
Godsmack
Care not for the men who wonder
Straw that broke your back, you're under
Cast all them aside who care
Empty eyes and dead end stare
Don't you know that none are blind
To the lie, and you think I don't find what you hide?
What in God's name have you done?
Stick your arm for some real fun
For the horse you've grown much fonder
Than for me, that I don't ponder
As the hair of one who bit you
Smiling bite your own self, too
And I think that you're not blind
To the ones you left behind
I'll be here
What in God's name have you done?
Stick your arm for some real fun
So be yearning all your life
Twisting, turning like a knife
Now you know the reasons why
Can't get high, or you will die
Or you'll die
What in God's name have you done?
Stick your arm for some real fun
So your sickness weighs a ton
And God's name is smack for some
I just can't describe my love for Alice in words. It's too incredible. Sometimes when I listen to some of their more mellow songs, it reminds me of Layne...unfortunately in a sad way...
I know what I'm going to do..I'm going totake a chance, and remotely try to describe my love for Alice In Chains. I will describe Alice In Chains, my favorite band forever, in a nutshell...Here goes..
Once upon a time, there was a band named Alice In Chains. They kicked ass...They had the perfect singer, Layne Staley, who could do shit that nobody could do. He had my favorite voice ever. They also, had a young man, named Jerry Cantrell, who could rip out a guitar solo, that was technical enough to make his solo sound good, but could still make it sound thrashy, and badass. They had a bassist, that played in their first 3 albums named Mike Starr, and for their last two albums, a bassist named Mike Inez who used to work with the Ozzy Osbourne, but went with Alice later on. He could pull out some good basslines and stuff, and could also play a lil' guitar and saxophone. They also had a drummer, by the name, Sean Kinney. He wasn't the greatest drummer ever, but was a solid drummer. He was always inventive with grooves, and was very solid behind the drums. Perfect for the band. All in all..they ruled the world.
Their first album Facelift was some heavy-metal shit, probably their most raw and heavy in many ways. This is the album that Godsmack rips off aswell. Godsmack has "Faceless" Alice has "Facelift". Those bastards! Anyways.. "We Die Young" is one of their greatest songs AIC made. The second Alice song I heard. (for some reason, I love it when Layne goes, "..and bury your BROTHERA" *guitar solo*). "Man In the Box" was a great song, with some kickass singing. Ie., "JE YEE YEE YEE SUS CHRIST". "Sea of Sorrow" was a damn fine song, with an almost Bluesy sound in it. "Bleed the Freak" is creepy as hell, with a nice flow..faster and slower faster and slower... "I Can't Remember" is a bleak, dark, deep, song. Very ghostly voices and guitar. in that one. "Love, Hate, Love" brings you in, and keeps you in, for about 6 minutes and 26 seconds. "It Ain't Like That" has a lighter, more drifting tone, but is crunchy at many times, like when they heavy riff comes in and just pushes down. "Sunshine" is my personal favorite song on there, with the very..sort of..different tone. Not quite Bluesy, because it's sorta' lighter than Blues. It's a very hard to explain song. It's an almost acidic song...but it's also a sort of just..brighter, and lighter song. I love it. "Put You Down" is a great song, with a light sort of Thrash sound. A very light Thrash sound, with a different tone. Fast and swooshing, with a sharp key. "Confusion" is a very nice song, and is more melodic and progressive than the others, with a sort of light and bright tone too. "I Know Somethin (Bout You)" has a sort of jammin', funky sound to it. "Real Thing" has an almost Elvis impression on it, with a lil' Van Halen sound in it, with Alice's own add to it. All in all, Facelift is a great album with their most Heavy material probably.
After that, came the nice set of songs that is "Sap". It's a short, but beautiful sort of thing. It's almost an acoustic album. Lots of guest singers too, like Ann Wilson,Mark Arm, and Chris Cornell.. "Brother" is a very melodic song, with a lil' heavy edge to it, dominantly Jerry Cantrell singing, and is probably my favorite song on here. "Got Me Wrong" is a very catchy tune, and is probably the most heavy on here, with a bluesy sound. "Right There" has Chris Cornell and Mark Arm as an added bonus, and they really add a nice sound to the song, and the song is stunning. "Am I Inside" is also a melodic song and is very nice. Then there's the added bonus track where the band does some weird, somewhat funny stuff.
Finally, came out a grand masterpiece, "Dirt". From head to toe, this is a great album. Of course Godsmack rips off this album too, with their logo and all. Oh welll...Anyways, this is probably the best album to start off with..it's the first Alice album I got and have always loved it. The first song it starts off with, is "Them Bones" which becomes hooked on you. It happens to be the first Alice In Chains song I ever heard aswell. It's short, heavy, and just damn good. It's a lot like "We Die Young". Not in sound, but it's around the same length, and is of course a great song to start off on. Second comes, "Dam That River" which is also a nice heavy song. Then comes the song "Rain When I Die" where you can hear some very hard rock riffs coming in that are more clear, but add to the exception of the distorted guitar notes. Then you have, "Down In A Hole" which is a very muddy, or as the album name suggests "Dirty" sound. "Sickman" is a great song, that pulls you all the way through, which is also a very muddy song. Then of course, comes "Rooster". Its lyrics are great, describing Jerry's father who was a Vietnam War veteran. It goes from a mellow sound, to a sort of screaming mellow sound. It's not too heavy, but not too soft. I love the part where they go "Yeah..they come to snuff the roosterrrrrrr". This one also pulls out some more hard rock riffing..Just all in all a great song. Next, comes "Junkhead"...it has some more heavy riffing going on, with Layne singing very sweetly, and melodically. The chorus too is very melodic, and Jerry and Layne fit together perfectly, along with the rest of the band. Like 4/4 of a puzzle coming together. "Dirt", the next song, is probably the weirdest, and more creepy of them all. The way Jerry distorts his guitar in there makes it a very chilling song, aswell as the way the voices sound. The bass is quite nice too, if you pay attention to it, and the drums are consistent...this is probably my second favorite song off of there. "God Smack" is a very cool song with a very wavy sound to it. Layne distorts his own voice in very good ways, and it gets deeper as it goes on, and changes in different places, to very different things. Yes, this is the song that Godsmack rips off of Alice In Chains. Then comes the lil' sort of weird thing they did "Iron Gland" which is basically crazed out, 43-second version of "Iron Man". After that comes, "Hate to Feel", which has a lot of slow-paced Black Sabbath influence, that is quite dark. And after that you have "Angry Chair", which I believe Layne Staley plays rhythm guitar on. His voice sounds really cool and echoing in the song. Next comes my favorite song off of here, "Would?". It has the most grinding, grungy sound off of the whole album. It truly is a great song. I really like the drum part on here for some reason too. It ends an incredible masterpiece perfectly.
Tomorrow..I will review "Jar of Flies", "Alice In Chains (Tripod)", and "MTV: Unplugged". It took me so long to write this so please give it a look. I would use the rest of my time writing about the other stuff, but my mom's making my go to bed. NOOOOOOO!!!! Oh well. Anyways, Alice In Chains rules, and will forever have put in a big puzzle piece, when it comes to music.
Oh yeah dude, the Tripod album was the best!!! I think the only thing that comes close to it was their Unplugged performance. Yeah, Dirt got me into AIC, and Jar of Flies was beautiful, but "Alice in Chains (Tripod)" was the shit!!! I love this album so much!! I think it really helps the fans tap in to the mind of Layne Staley.
Yeah. We Die Young was on the radio just a lil' while back, and I was watching this show on VH1 called "The 100 Most Metal Moments", and Alice was in there! I was like "Holy shit!". I guess they were on this episode of the MTV show "Headbangers Ball", and, they went to this waterpark and did some funny shit. I really wanna' find that episode on DVD or download it somehow, but it's probably virtually impossible. Those guys are just so hilarious. Jerry Cantrell was wearing a speedo...but anyways, Heaven Beside You is just a great song. On "Tripod" pretty much every song is worthy of the radio. I mean, there is no greatest hits with them really. Especially on Tripod. You can take your pick on "Tripod", or with pretty much all the Alice tracks. Oh yeah..just been done teaching myself the part in the beginning of "No Excuses"..and what a cool part. I think that "Jar of Flies" had some really tasty drumming..and Tripod too.
I just watched the Unplugged DVD yesterday, it had been so long since I had watched it. I initially wanted to put it on while I was making some notes for my class, but I couldn't stop keep looking at it, so I just sat down and watched it straight through.
I love when Layne yells "fuck" after missing a line (I think) in Sludge Factory. Jerry also seems really laid back and engaging with the audience in this performance.
Layne looks so frail. When he takes off his shades and you see the close up of his eyes, its kinda creepy
oh my goodness..Layne's eyes..I hear you on that one. Whenever you see them, there is an eerie emotion just compacted..a million emotions in fact. Very moving when you see them..the look of one who seemed to have lost it all yet kept that glimmer of hope..almost reaching out for someone to help him, just a pleading..gorgeously tragic...
Glad to see this thread alive yet again, however. I've been on a Facelift binge as well, and I have really been getting into It Ain't Like That. An absolutely phenomenal album. Long live AIC in our hearts.
It Ain't Like That
There I was, laid out on a table
Screamin' sweat and bare feet to the floor
In my life, I'd not soften
Things that cut, and burn so often
But I sit, think of somethin'
Scared to face, the dyin' nothin'
See the cycle I've waited for
It ain't like that anymore
Where I go is when I feel I'm able
How I fight is why I'm feelin' sore
In my sight, not forgotten
Feel as though, a tooth were rotten
Behind the smile, a tongue that's slippin'
Buzzards cry, when flesh is rippin'
See the cycle I've waited for
It ain't like that anymore
Here I sit writing on the paper
Trying to think of words you can't ignore
In my eyes, what I'm lacking
Score at face, a ten for slacking
Sign the deal, set in motion
Smaller fish, so huge the ocean
See the cycle I've waited for
It ain't like that anymore
See the cycle I've waited for
It ain't like that anymore
YES! Awesome reachdown12! I already know that while we both love ALL the albums, we share a very special bond with FACELIFT. :) Now I'm just in awe that you chose to post my FAV song from the album! haha. How cool is that? Man we have kick ass taste. :D GREAT choice. I loooove that chunky bad boy. \m/ Seriously rocks my world! It was one of the very first songs that I got into. Again, GREAT selection my friend. :D
smarchee, I love that DVD so much but it honestly is very difficult to watch. :( Sad, sad things there. Layne is just wasting away right before your very eyes. It hurts. And to hear him sing certain lyrics that ring so true to him and his actual physical apperance is just beyond haunting. :( At the same time I can't praise the Unplugged sessions enough- some of my fav versions of fav songs are on there. That performance was incredible and sounded SOOO amazingly good. I think the added sadness that we can see/hear with Layne added to the greatness of the show too really. AIC has always been dark, and this just really took it to a whole different level. Very intense. It definitely lures you in and demands you to feel. I'm not surprised you weren't able to get any schoolwork done. :p
Yes Vedhead27, a very amazing song indeed. Also one of my first songs, which I experienced during Singles. Great performance. ahh, love this band..need we say more? lol. And amazingly yes, I am still on my Facelift binge, and yes I do know of the special placing for it.;) and I shall post Confusion, yet another phenomenal song from this album. Cheers to one of the greatest bands to rock us to end! lol :D
Confusion
There's no time to give at all
I cause you grief and blow my hatred
Further in your mind
You reach, I run, you fall
On skinned knees you crawl
I want to set you free, recognize my disease
Love, sex, pain, confusion, suffering
You're there crying, I feel not a thing
Drilling my way deeper in your head
Sinking, draining, drowning, bleeding, dead
So you sit and think of love
I wait, hate all the more, I fall
On skinned knees I crawl
I want to set you free, recognize my disease
Love, sex, pain, confusion, suffering
You're there crying, I feel not a thing
Drilling my way deeper in your head
Sinking, draining, drowning, bleeding, dead
Now there's time to give it all
I put my fears behind again
On skinned knees we'll crawl
I want to set you free, recognize my disease
Love, sex, pain, confusion, suffering
You're there crying, I feel not a thing
Drilling my way deeper in your head
Sinking, draining, drowning, bleeding, dead
Love, sex, pain, confusion, suffering
My second fav right there! ;) HA! What the?! YOU ROCK reachdown12! ROCK ON my friend!!! :D CONFUSION is such a tripped out song. I absolutely LOVE that intro. :o Layne's voice is strong as hell!!! When he gets to the "On skinned knees you crawl" line?! Shit! That "craaaaaaaawl" never fails to just blow my mind. Yeah, the voice is strong as hell here...so are these words...the song digs deep. Mmmm, love that solo too...and then how it gets all quiet again afterward, the voice comes in and just sends us. I think, once again cuze this band is BRILLIANT, that the music (mainly that tweaked out guitar) just fits the entire mood, every word, spot on. A-MAZING! *yells* This band is TOO MUCH!!!
Ahhh the Singles performance indeed! :) :) :)
Yep, this band will never stop rocking our worlds....and we'll never stop praising it. :D
hey now, where is the respect for Sunshine !!!!! Tis my favourite song from Facelift.
Show your love for Sunshine \m/
Am I too contagious
Full of sick desire
Am I that I promise
Burning corpsed pyre
Then some dude came down to touch the Mother
Mother touched, and dude ain't here no more
Am I your reflection
Melting mirror smile
Am I worth the value
Do my love defile
Then some dude came down to touch the Mother
Mother touched and dude ain't here no more
Ain't no day the sun don't crack
Try brand some name across my back so you care?
Find someone to tell you
CHORUS
Sunshine...sweet love my labor
Don't mind...I don't care no more
Can you face the queston?
Is my soul entire?
Oh, there is plenty enough of respect to go around for it, Smarchee. Definitely a great one I will agree. The entire album is a masterpiece to me that will never die. Although I love everything AiC has done, I feel there is a certain element, certain passion flowing through the music of this album that is not on any of their workings. It is a timeless beauty mixed in with a deep rage and loss that is entwined so intricately that it proves to be simply flawless to all those who hear it. I as well speak very deeply of those things that I am passionate about and know that the love for this album is undying.
the greatest band in history. i am not prone to over-emotion but layne is the only musician i have ever heard who makes me want to cry. the day i bought unplugged i had a 45 minute bus ride home. i had never heard nutshell before and by the time i got home, i had yet to move to track 2. i listened to nutshell repeatedy thinking that i would have paid the full price just for that one song. it is astonishing. given circumstances, "if i can't be my own, i'd feel better dead" seems prophetic. layne lost himself and never found himelf again.
5 songs that make layne the most moving singer in history
shame in you - 3 simple words ... Oh my god
Nutshell - the most emotional track i have ever heard
River of deceit - just for the first line "my pain is self chosen..."
Dirt - anyone else would make this sound wallowing, layne makes it stunning
Junkhead - the reason is in the lyrics
What does friend mean to you?
A word so wrongfully abused
Are you like me, confused
All included but you
Alone...
The sounds of silence often soothe
Shapes and colors shift with mood
Pupils widen and change their hue
Rapid brown avoid clear blue
Why's it have to be this way
Be this way
Flowers watched through wide brown eyes bloom
A child sings an unclaimed tune
Innocence spins cold cocoon
Grow to see the pain too soon
Why's it have to be this way
Be this way (5x)
"At 7 am on a Tuesday, usual August ...
Next week I'll be 28...
I'm still young, it'll be me...
Off the wall I scrape... you...
I can't wake, I gotta wake...
To cause this wake, I gotta wake no more...
It causes wake, to drown this hate....
To never really stay, never will.....
You take your plate...
Put me through hell, live, live...
Direct your fate...
You say I can do it so well...
Your expiration date...
Fate, date, expiration date...
(this was the last time)
Hate...
And don't fuck with me again...
My own clean slate...
Don't fuck with me again...
Makes your eyes dilate...
Makes you shake...
Irate..."
a WELL overdue bump. Yeah JOF is awesome. Rotton Apple is sooooooo good and then Nutshell just comes along and floors you every time. and has anyone else noticed that even though Layne doesn't feature on whale and wasp, he is there anyway? by that i mean jerry's guitar and that viola or whatever is in the song just sound like Layne anyway. it's as if it is the musical equivalent of his voice and that is what made AiC so special. They were four parts of one whole. Jerry's playing and Layne's voice were one and same
OOOoooooh, so not too long ago I FINALLY heard a rough copy of the tsunami-relief show from last year!!! The remaining 3 performaing together for the first time in 6 YEARS! :eek: AHHHH!!!!!!! WHAT A SHOW!!! I still can't believe this happened! HAIL HAIL the lucky ones that were actually there. :eek: Can you imagine????? :o Jerry, Mike and Sean performed AIC songs with a ton of special guests... Wes Scantlin (Puddle of Mudd), Pat Lachman (Damageplan),Ann Wilson (Heart)....and most importanly, MAYNARD!!!!!! Damn!!! Ok, even though the copy I heard was reeeeeally rough I had chills the whole way through. I could not believe my ears!!! They played a TON of songs too. I was thinking maybe a few AIC songs but nope...a WHOLE bunch...
>>>BROTHER, KILLER IS ME, AGAIN, WOULD,ANGRY CHAIR. They also played IT AIN'T LIKE THAT reachdown12!!!!:eek: :D
Ahhh I was freaking out even more once I heard that opening riff. :D The set was, as the show itself, out of this frickin woooorld. MAYNARD absolutely NAILED Man in the Box & Them Bones. ***chills just thinking about it** I would LOVE to get my hands on a copy of this. You honestly stop caring about the super crappy quality because the show just has you mesmerized! Unreal.
Mentioning it above made me realize it hasn't been posted yet so....allow me to BUMP it up with this sick, sick, SICK ass # from one of THE greatest bands EVER. As it's been discussed many times in here, the power behind Layne's voice is seriously incredible. Even just when he sings the "yeah" part over and over here it's fuckin AMAZING!!!!!!! The voice has SO much power & it is one of the few that remain untouchable, in a league all it's own.
Will forever miss this band, this voice, this face......
Will forever love & praise the greatness....
The power lives on.
This thread is awesome! Back in the day they were my favorite band in the world (yes I liked them more than PJ)! Everybody's pretty much summed up the way I feel about AIC. I got Facelift for x-mas when I was 12 and it totally blew me away.After Real Thing ended I just sat there exhausted like, "Wow! What was that? This band kicks ass." Like a musical orgasm. I noticed how unique and powerful Layne's vocal were. Every great album has a strong intro and I loved the riff and then SCARY'S ON THE WALL... so heavy.
I remember somebody talking about the headbanger's ball episode at the water park and i think i have that on VHS still. I hope it didn't get taped over, you know i'm gonna spend all my free time tomorrow looking for it. There was another earlier one where they were at some mansion (Hugh Hefner's?) and they were pointing out celebrity 'barf marks' as Sean put it and throwing each other in the pool. LOL. Anyone remember that? i don't know if anyone's mentioned it but i like the Nona Tapes where Jerry's dressed as a woman and Sean as a drunk clown. Those guys are so goofy!
My aggression
Is where you stake
Your claim
Why I question
This curve on which you grade
My conception
A joke? Or latest craze?
I try to get away
And yet I stick around
So fall and crawl away
And brush away loose ground
My intention
Can I arrive at eight
Lie and dream some
Surprise you guys I'm late
All right, correction, forgetting something
Wait
I try to get away
And yet I stick around
So fall and crawl away
And brush away loose ground
Yeah...
I try to get away
And yet I stick around
So fall and crawl away
And brush away loose ground
Brush away loose ground
Brush away loose ground
This guitar work at the end too??? :o Wooow. Incredible! These sounds are seriously hypnotizing.
Damn what a band!
Yeah, Alice in Chains went through a lot of shit until Man in the Box blew up in '91, but Layne knew that one day they were gonna kick ass, and they did!
In remeberance of a beautiful soul on this day, I felt the need to resurrect this thread. 4 years to this very day..we lost such a gorgeous talent so unique in his own form. Many doth try to imitate, but fail miserably yet still continue to disgrace with perpetual ignorance towards the real being, pure and true that I speak of..Layne. In every which way, he was rightful to grace the earth, with his beautiful, childlike, yet so troubled and darkened soul..what he gave us..this band gave us..was beyond any comprehension. and when those certain musicians do that to you, it is so incredible one wonders just how they could ever disrespect or stop loving. Layne--vocally, lyrically, even the personality and charisma--it shone through with a radiance so bright, yet its shadow casting deep into the darkness. It makes me so sad he couldn't save himself but we know we all move on but never forget. Forever immortalized Layne will be in our hearts and minds. Regardless of the self-conflicting battle he never won, he is still a magnificent force to be reckoned with..once more, Rest In Peace Layne..We love you.
Nutshell
We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...
My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead
Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...
I read a few weeks ago that AIC were coming to SuperBock SuperRock, a portuguese festival, in the same day as Tool (which I wanted to see). So, I decided to get into AIC and it was one of the best things I could do. I'm really liking this band. I have no doubt that it will continue growing on me...
This band had it own special sound, I can't explain, I need to continue my listenings, but it's something special...
R.I.P. Layne
When you stack up the attributes that make a great rock band, singing, guitar, rhythm section, songwriting, attitude, playing live, musical variety and versitility, AIC certainly has to rank very high in most of these catagories, but I can think of no other band in rock history that had their Chemistry. The back and forth between Layne and Jerry's voices. I think jerry is the most crucial backing singer in rock music; would Man in the box be the same without his singing part? Would? Down in a hole? plus he could carry a song,
"Over Now" "Heaven Beside you" "Brother". It seemed like jerry was writing a lot of songs for Layne's voice, and for layne. How many AIC songs did you figure that layne wrote, and it turned out to be Jerry. "Down in a Hole" "Grind"
The music combined so perfectly with Laynes voice, equal parts power and pain, with just enough evil and innocence to make their songs absolutly human and real.
I like facelift the best of all their albums, because that kind of music brought out the best in layne's voice. Yes, he had an incredible voice, so he sounded great on everything they put out, but he was a mother f'n rock singer, and facelift put his voice on display in its best light. The first six songs are great songs that anyone can love, but the last half of the album starts to lose a little bit to casual fans, I love it because starting with #6 "Love Hate Love" to the end, that is when Layne Staley belted out songs like no man ever on this planet. Start of every long road trip with Facelift. The mark of a great album is that you want to just hit repeat, but you know what is coming on the next song, so you can't. That is what "We Die Young" and "MITB" do to me every time. "I can't remember" is a vastly underrated song, with an amazing, I can only describe it as convincing guitar riff.
Dirt is the AIC album that will turn almost anyone into a fan if they listen to it with a open ear, so many great songs, and while the material is depressing, it is still a fun listen, and does not bring you down. absolutly should be included with the best albums of all time.
Jar of flies is a great album to smoke weed to and get into a emotional place, and be sad for a little bit. That good kind of sad that makes you feel human and refreshes you, leaves you thinking about the world differently for a few hours.
I just have so many thoughts about this band, but I'm going to stop now. Jerry Cantrell's Degradation trip Vol 1&2 is a great listen, much better than bogey depot.
danielson, that was so beautifully said. :D Great post!!! Awww, and you know...I really can't choose favs with this amazing ass band but I must agree that FACELIFT has a super special place in my heart and sure seems to get the most play. All in all, this band continuously wrote life changing, incredible, stand alone in it's greatness music that gets most of us so emotional it's hard to form the right words of praise. NOTHING can describe the impact this band has had on our lives. The power forever lives on! :) AWWWWWWW speaking of which, THE AOL SESSIONS : Behind The Scenes?? Did you guys see it?? *tears* "Layne Staley lives within". AWWW!!!!! I couldn't help but tear up. How touching was that? :) I love it! The PJ/Layne love together as one. :o
UH OH....SPEAKING OF WHICH....
This HUMONGOUS BUMP is mainly due in part to the fact that PEARL JAM SOUNDCHECKED IT AINT LIKE THAT LAST NIGHT and I'm seriously freaking out beyond control!!!! :eek: YOU GUYS!!! AHHHH!!! Somebody hold me!! haha.
Thanks man, appreciate it.
Of all the AIC songs, I'm surprised PJ would play it ain't like that, cool though.
I've had SAP in heavy rotation the last few days, and the more I listen to it, the more I love it. "Brother" actually sounds better from the unplugged performance, I had "Right Turn" stuck in my head for hours yesterday amazing.
Alice In Chains was an amazing band. I personally think that Down In A Hole, Nutshell, Don't Follow, and Shame In You are easily four of the best songs ever. Jar of Flies is an amazing album.
But, Alice In Chains just had too many stinkers on their albums. I can only find 2-4 enjoyable songs on each.
You obviously like their lighter stuff Forbetterorforworse - and since AIC is primarily a heavy band, I guess I can understand you not liking a lot of their stuff, even If I don't agree. I don't know if you've heard SAP, but for what you like from them, I would definately recomend it to you. Four songs that would have fit in nicely with Jar of Flies, SAP is really a Jerry Cantrell album, while Jar of Flies is more of a Layne Staley album.
I haven't BUMPED this thread in a LONG while, I MUST show my love for AIC. They are one of the few bands, along w/the Smashing Pumpkins, that made my junior high years go by less painfully! :D I remember when I would come home from school, I would put DIRT on my cd player and put my headphones on, and I was in my own little world. :) Their music will ALWAYS be a part of me, and Jerry and Layne made great combination too :)
I found this on You Tube, one of their countless of interviews w/Riki.
