just got the album..wow..huge improvement from the previous two albums.
i got the UK version with the dvd and book-like packaging..
so far my favorite tracks are Part of the Queue and The Importance of Being Idle
the dvd has nothing much though..just the EPK which can be found easily online..and the Lyla video..but pretty neat packaging
And yes the sleeve has all the lyrics :D

i love the new oasis album and the song "lyla" but your right on this one. the main verse of lyla is a complete and total ripoff of street fighting man no doubt about it. this is nothing new for oasis, they've had lots of ripoff type songs. i still like them though.

1. take the beatles
2. slice out 75% of their collective brains
3. let them write some new stuff (with their newly found ingenius)
4. add a pussy for a frontman who thinks he's bigger than Jesus..........
and whala

once again this album is just absolute proof of their incapability to do anything but rip off previous well worked efforts

Admittedly this is only after 4 listens but I am a tad disappointed.
I am a big fan and have been since 94, so please don't accuse me of being an Oasis hater, but I think the new album is a bit of a let down.
I've read nothing but 4 star reviews, so perhaps my expectation levels were unreasonably high.
Turn Up The Sun is FAR too slow.
I find Mucky Fingers irritating.
Lyla is very good though.
Love Like a Bomb is decent enough.
The Importance of Being Idle is essentially The Coral, and I can't stand them, so this one does nothing for me.
The Meaning of Soul is ok.
Guess God Thinks I'm Abel is very good but what a waste at the end! I thought it was all going to kick off for an extended jam or heavy section and all of a sudden it just ends! I know some may think that is the song's charm, but it smacks more of a missed opportunity to me.
I can't remember anything about Part Of The Queue and Keep The Dream Alive, so they certainly haven't captured my imagination.
A Bell Will Ring is Oasis-By-Numbers but still pretty good nonetheless.
Let There Be Love is excellent. There must have been a huge temptation to roll out the 48 piece orchestra and have 3 key changes a la All Around The World but they thankfully and wisely chose to do something a bit different and more lo-fi with the inevitable flag-waving closer. Diversity is not usually one of Oasis's strong points, so I was quite glad when I heard this one.
Overall though, I'd give it 3 stars. No more, no less.
I think some reviewers are so glad to have them back so they can write about them, that this has influenced their opinions.
Each to their own though...

They have been albatrossed with this tag for a while now.
It was Noel and Liam who made the early comparisons, saying they wanted to be bigger than The Beatles etc and the press seemed to use this as a statement about their musical intentions.
I can think of a couple of examples where they actually seem to have ripped off The Beatles:
- the coda to She's Electric - it's the coda to A Little Help From My Friends (not the best song to choose to rip off if you ask me)
- Cigarettes In Hell - the mellotron is reminiscent of Strawberry Fields
Other than that though, I don't really see the comparison. There may be a general comparison to make, but no more than that.
I've always thought because of their swagger, they were much more akin to The Stones than The Beatles. The latter were never as rough around the edges as Oasis.
However, other than one line in the verse of Lyla, they have never directly ripped off The Stones either to my knowledge.
Furthermore, Oasis are to be commended in my book for their deference and reverance to The Beatles and The Stones which has resulted in 2 excellent covers - I Am The Walrus and Street Fighting Man - both are fresh and interesting versions.
I see your point about preferring to listen to the originals rather than the imitators but feel this is doing Oasis a disservice. They have contributed some amazing and original songs such as Live Forever, Acquiesce, Rockin Chair, to name but a few.
I would agree if you said why listen to Jet - just listen to AC/DC but that is because Jet don't seem to add anything new at all to what AC/DC have done.
Oasis on the other hand have added something new to their influences. The overall sound of Oasis in particular, especially on their first album, was definitely fresh and new at the time.
One might even venture, playing devil's advocate, why listen to The Stones? Just listen to the black r&b originals that never got the credit they deserved and that The Stones stood on the shoulders of to develop their own sound.
Everyone is influenced by someone. Music is an evolutionary process. It's ok to be inspired by someone, but try and add something new to the mix.
In my humble opinion, Oasis have...

most oasis fans agree anyway that the last 2 albums have been lacking something. don't get me wrong, both have some awesome songs (gas panic, force of nature, hindu times, go let let it out, etc), but every song wasn't awesome like say every song on definitely maybe or WTSMG were. so i definitely agree with you that it's not us fans being biased about the new album.

Totally agree.
I've always enjoyed Standing On The Shoulders as well and never understood the poor reviews it got. Gas Panic, FITB and Go Let It Out in particular are massivley underrated.
I often think the media heap praise on one album and then slate the next one. They do love a good Oasis backlash. Then, when they realise they have missed all the shenanigans and good copy that only Oasis can provide, they change tack and hype up the next return, realising they have missed them.
I always remember the NME review of Morning Glory back in 95. The NME was desperate to start an Oasis backlash and was doing them down for weeks. The rating the album got was actually 8 out of 10 but read like a 5. For a time, some portions of the music press seemed scared of giving them a bad review!
Gave the new album another couple of listens last night and it has gravitated to 3.5 stars now.
The flaws are it's far too short and Mucky Fingers and Importance of Being Idle annoy me.
Once again though, Keep The Dream Alive is a special song (it is now my favourite) and Let There Be Love is a cool closer.

ok i've listen more patiently and:
-turn up the sun is a great opener, cool lyrics, good tempo and nice guitarwork
-mucky fingers has not yet grown on me yet
-lyla the logical pick for the 1st single
-love like a bomb, this is the oasis sound that got me hooked in the ist place, controlled easy listening poppy tune.
-the importance of being idle... fucking brilliant
-meaning of soul, see mucky fingers.
-..thinks im abel, noel showing of and doing a good job.
-part of the queue, very rhythmic tune, reminds me of other songs, has a timeless quality
-keep the dream alive, solid n uplifting oasis tune
-a bell will ring, nice uptempo sound, cool lyrics
-let there be love... yes let there be love!
btw i found a version of this album like a little book with a dvd in it, pretty nice, i like 'special' packaging

I finally picked this up yesterday. I do think it's better than the last two albums. I think that Mucky Fingers and The Importance of Being Idle need to grow on me; I don't understand why Noel insisted on singing them. Liam's tunes, on the other hand, are great. In fact, the whole second half of the album is amazing. My favorite so far is Keep the Dream Alive.
The haters have been pointing out the similarities between Lyla and Street Fighting Man, but I haven't heard anyone remark on the similarity between the verse in Part of the Queue and Bananarama's Cruel Summer. Am I crazy?

well that is true, oasis are certainly not that deep like say tori amos or the cure are deep but that's a good thing because the songs are catchy and stick in your head and that makes for an enjoyable band. if i just picked my music based on the intelligence of lyrics, i probably would get bored and miss out on a lot of cool bands.

close this thread so that we can start to reserve some credibility once more. then we can deposit this credibility in an account that provides compound interest for the "act against established mediocricy".

Don't Believe The Truth has debuted at No.1 in the UK smashing other major release by The Black Eyed Peas which came in at No.4. Gorillaz falls to No.2.
Whats The Story Morning Glory has jumped 11 places to No.27, Definitely Maybe jumps 19 places to No.48 and Heathen Chemistry is No. 68.
not bad...older albums are still on the UK charts :D

Guess God Thinks I'm Abel is a great song..but i wished the outro could have started a new verse to song instead of just being an outro
Totally agree - I said the same in a post earlier in this thread.
I think all of Liam's songs are too short but that one could really have done with the heavy outro continuing for a bit. As I said before, a missed opportunity.
I'm still amazed by Keep The Dream Alive. What's even more surprising is that it's an Andy Bell-penned track.
Best on the album in my humble opinion...

I agree Gem's aren't the best but they are ok. If anything, A Bell Will Ring should be longer too.
I get the feeling that 4/5 of the songs off Truth have been finished in a slap-dash manner. It's almost as though (especially with Liam's songs) they couldn't be arsed writing a middle 8 or a bridge and just thought sod it that'll do - hence many songs are 3 minutes or under.
Don't get me wrong though - I still like the album and am giving it massive airplay in Casa Poison.
Can't believe I am conversing in a civil manner with a Liverpool fan...

I agree with Meaning of Soul because that's the kind of song it is.
However, we are already in agreement about Guess God Thinks I'm Abel and I reckon A Bell Will Ring and Love Like A Bomb could be longer too.
It just seems to me that when you buy an album with 11 songs on, you expect it to be longer than 43 minutes.
Maybe there should have been an extra song on it.
I am indeed an Evertonian.

I may be wrong, but there appear to be a lot more keyboards on this album than in previous ones. It will be interesting to see if they include them in live versions. I haven't listened to that live version of "Turn Up the Sun" yet. Do they have some hired gun playing the keys?
I'm getting amped to see them in Mass later this month.

however, the people that just come on and insult oasis and their fans just to start fights, not cool. when i read this thread i want to hear opinions about the album, i don't want to read bullshit about liam and noel's attitudes because i don't care about that and it deviates from the topic.

Oasis. Well, well, well.
Back in the mid 1990's, there was a time when bands like Oasis roamed the earth. It was a time of increased machoism, and the 'lad' culture was newly born, fuelled by increased popularity in footall (EURO 96 helped), laddettes (Zoe Ball, Sara Cox), New Labour, Lad magazines (Loaded, FHM) and indie (Bands like Oasis, Blue, Stone Roses, OCS etc). The music defined an age, edgy, fashionable, rocky and sensitive. It was in this musical landscape that Oasis thrived, playing up on the age, by staging massive outdoor concerts, being drunk all the time, hanging out with Blair and being seen at all the right parties. Their music at this time was good too, properly rocking, with riffs, and the ballads were excellent.
However, Oasis' third record, signalled the end of the lad movement. Be Here Now was a terrible record, comprising not a single new tune, and moments of gross self indulgence (All Around The World, Do You Know What I Mean). As the other bands of that era have either disappeared, or reinvented themselves (Blur, Radiohead), Oasis have clung desparately to their past glories, still swearing and acting all cocky in interviews, which just sound stupid when they're all approaching their 40's.
Their records since this time, have all been largely dissappointing affairs, with only a trace of their former glories (Stop Crying Your Heart Out), overshadowed by the huge amounts of dross (Lyla).
With new bands challenging our perceptions of 'popular' music, and the mainstream sound getting heavier and heavier, Oasis are just embarrassing, to the large population of Britain, an embarrassment.
Of course, Oasis are shit would have been quicker.

I think one of the reasons for their emergence and initial popularity was that they were a complete opposite to the shoe-gazing, "our fans are idiots" and "I don't want to be famous" attitudes of their Grunge counterparts, thus were a welcome change. Oasis wanted it all.
The main reason though, was that they had great songs. Live Forever, Slide Away, Cast No Shadow, Wonderwall, Whatever - to name but a few of their earlier work. Never mind the oft-quoted superior B Sides that they virtually threw away.
I will agree that their music has been in decline somewhat since Morning Glory but firmly believe they still add gems to an already stagnant music scene in this country. Some often judge them by their own earlier and higher standards and I would agree, using this yardstick, they fail to reach those vertigo-inducing heights.
However, they still deserve our attention and I for one, believe this new album to be somewhat of a resurgence.
Of course, saying Oasis are still pretty great would have been quicker...

I've been listening to the Go Let It Out single a lot lately.
First of all, the A Side was really underrated in my opinion, but how good were the B Sides?
Let's All Make Believe is astounding and Cigarettes In Hell is excellent too.
Many believe all the best B Sides to be around the Cigarettes & Alcohol to Don't Look Back In Anger period (from which Underneath the Sky was an underdog favourite of mine) and often overlook this little classic...

i bought all the singles when i went to london in 1997, happiest day of my life since i couldn't find them anywhere. i've stopped collecting after "Do you Know What I mean", i'm not that big of a B-side freak because with most bands they are just disappointing.

I do agree that "Let's All Make Believe" is a gem, and "Carry Us All" is sweet as well. But I'm still hoping for another "Whatever."
Did someone say earlier that "The Importance of Being Idle" is confirmed as the next single? Is that true for the US as well?

yeh Noel's vocals have really improved..noticed that...Turn Up the Son is a great opener..especially love the outro...intro does remind me of Travis alittle
i definitely noticed that too, Noel hasn't sounded so crisp since "talk tonight"...so far my favorite track is "the meaning of soul".
this album is by far an improvement, the songs are concise, not bloated or overproduced and overall, it's the probably the best Oasis album since WTSMG

becos im obssessed with it lately, here's my track by track rundown of this one:
turn up the sun- great opener, it's got a nice groove and kinda reminds me of that "reach out and touch faith" song for some reason.
mucky fingers- noel's songs shine all the more now that he doesnt have to write so many shite filler tunes. this is one. heavy bob dylan/wilco influence as i see it. i love it.
lyla- wasnt too keen on it at first, but it grows on me. solid rock track but definitely nothing special as far as this album goes. nonetheless one of their better tunes in years.
love like a bomb- the grown up version of songbird. a sweet love tune where liam finally shows he can write a decent hook with lyrics that aren't laughable.
importance of being idle- i dont get the hype. it's a good song, but i think both noel ditties on this album are better. it's got a fun feel to it though.
meaning of soul- reminds me of green disease. i like that they finally seem to show a little restraint with the rockers on this one.
guess god thinks im abel- puts me in mind of a latter day pearl jam tune. it's got great tension and atmosphere and seems ready to explode... but it doesn't. i love it.
part of the queue- my fav noel tune this go round. great chorus (his singing is exponentially better than heathen chem) and the coda is perfect, love that piano.
keep the dream alive- my fav song on here... and not a gllagher brother tune! the chorus is so catchy and uplifting. really takes me back to old school oasis. too bad it'll probly never get single status cos i think it'd be a hit.
a bell will ring- the best rocker on here. the attitude is back, reminds me of the song morning glory with its edge and attitude. stellar.
let there be love- classic oasis closer. my friend heard about 5 seconds the first listen and was like "this is the last song isnt it?" but it's still good. reminds me of wilco's poor places. it's a nice duet, but in the end it doesn't hit me like some of these tracks have. nonetheless, great way to close a fantastic album.

But i wanted it for my collection as i have all the singles etc. I'm glad i bought it! Its only 2 listens but i like it straight away. Liam abandons gig
(Tuesday June 14, 2005 10:48 AM)
Liam Gallagher is reported to have stormed offstage at an Oasis show in Italy midway through the gig.
Gallagher junior apparently stopped singing during through a rendition of "Champagne Supernova" at a festival in Imola, Italy, as part of the band's European tour.
The gig, at the Heineken Jammin' Festival, continued without Liam, after brother Noel took over singing duities and reshuffled the set-list after it became clear Liam was not returning.
According to reports in The Sun this morning, Noel believes Liam has "lost interest" in the band. He explained: "I don't talk to Liam any more. I can't. It always ends up in a fight.
"He screams like some juvenile to get attention. It's so sad. He's so defiant all the time. Lately it's been like he's lost interest."
Oasis begin a full UK tour at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland on June 29.

apparently there is a rumor floating around that they are scrapping the first week of the US tour because noel and liam aren't speaking, who the fuck knows at this point what the hell is going on, all I know is their asses better be onstage on the 22nd at MSG or I will be PISSED.

i think it will be very silly to cancel any dates on the US tour..cos the album is doing pretty decent now on the Billboard charts ( #37 this week) close to 100k copies sold which is an improvement from Heathen Chemisty too.

Jet opened the show, they weren't bad, actually they are a better band when they were just jamming and not playing just their songs because they sounded different. Their drummer is insane and entertaining to watch. Definitely not the best opening band i've seen but definitely not the worst! But MSG is tough because most of the times, people don't even pay attention to the opening act and are rude but Jet actually held everyone's attention and people were into it, which was cool.
MSG was awesome, the band sounds TIGHT, Liam's voice was excellent (sounds even better than he does on Familiar to Millions), Noel was in a great mood and actually talked and joked and Zak Starkey is amazing, he went wild during "my generation". Total different style of drumming from Ringo, he's more like Keith Moon, beating the shit out of his drums, heh. When Liam first walked out on stage, he was like "we've finally made it here" and did his snotty strut all night, soaking up all the attention, heh.
My only complaints, no Supersonic, Columbia, not a lot of stuff from be here now, heathen chemistry or SOTSOG and they only played 90 minutes, i was hoping that maybe NYC would be treated to a little something special but alas I am spoiled by pearl jam :) Bring it on Down, one of my favorites, was totally ignored by the crowd, at least where I was but champagne supernova was the definite highlight, sounded 10 times better than it does on morning glory. And they played Meaning of Soul, which is my fav from the new album, it was great, a 2 minute burst of energy, fantastic!
i think liam and noel are still pissed at each other, liam was trying to say something before wonderwall and noel started the song so liam was like "i'll just fucking shut up" and I think liam was pissed a few times about the arrangements, like "bring it on down" was way to fast so he like held up his hand to noel to slow down.
here's the setlist:
Fuckin' in the Bushes
Turn up the Sun
Lyla
Love Like a Bomb
Bring it on Down
Morning Glory
Cigarettes and Alcohol
The Importance of being Idle
Little by Little
A Bell Will Ring
Live Forever
The Meaning of Soul
Mucky Fingers
Champagne Supernova
Rock n' Roll Star
Encore:
Songbird
Wonderwall
Don't Look Back in Anger
My Generation

hopefully, in the row in front of me, were a couple of older yuppies who seriously just showed up to hear Wonderwall, that was the only song they actually were into, i hate when people do that. Noel let the crowd sing the entire chorus to DLBIA, so there's still a lot of love for Oasis in NYC and the garden was sold out. if they keep turning out top notch performances like last night, they should definitely get more people interested in Don't believe the Truth.

that's cool, even though I thought Heathen Chemistry and SOTSOG were quite good, I think this is the way Oasis have to technically "prove" themselves to the US again, by going out and rocking the new songs. and they played 3 new songs in a row so they definitely have faith in the new material.
pfft Wonderwall wasn't even a highlight for me, it was great to hear it live in person but I really would have rather heard "gas panic", "force of nature" "the hindu times" "cast no shadow" "d'you know what I mean" or "columbia" to be quite honest.

pfft Wonderwall wasn't even a highlight for me, it was great to hear it live in person but I really would have rather heard "gas panic", "force of nature" "the hindu times" "cast no shadow" "d'you know what I mean" or "columbia" to be quite honest.
"Gas Panic" "D'YKWIM" and "Columbia" really sound great live i never did enjoy Wondewall or Champagne Supernova live...
probably my favorite live tracks from them are Columbia,Go Let it Out,Supersonic,Slide Away,Gas Panic and Morning Glory

Oasis don't need to prove themselves to the US. Americans don't really have the best taste in music and Oasis aren't appreciated enough in the states. Don't Believe The Truth is a great album and I was lucky enough to see them in Toronto on Friday and they were awsome. All of Oasis' albums are quality, but casual fans won't enjoy Heathen Chemisty or SOTSOG. The new album is great and that's all that matters.

I agree with this. Bands like Pearl Jam and a handfull of others aside, I would argue that the US is one of the worst music scenes right now for rock and roll. Oasis has a large audience in many other countries; I don't think they should even tour the US again after their first week sales of Don't Believe the Truth. I say stick to Europe and Canada; the US doesn't get it yet.

Columbia, D'YKWIM and Slide Away I've never heard live so it would have been awesome to hear those :( for the others I've got Familiar to Millions but that doesn't compare the live experience...
it would be cool though if they incorporate more material from BHN, SOTSOG and HC because there are some awesome songs there that people would love live, hell people were going nuts for "little by little" last night!

i was totally surprised about little by little, i really wasn't a fan of the song but after last night, it sparked my interest.
i would also love to hear "better man" from heathen chemistry, another one of my favs, love liam's vocals!
are you going to see them this tour?
i've been a fan since 1995 and i never saw them because of all the stuff i heard about them cancelling shows and liam walking off, etc. but unless something happens, this tour definitely seems like the tour to see them on since they appear to be incredibly happy to be playing live.

I'm a huge fan of this band, but if they ever played one of those two turds I would go take a piss.
The setlist looks great. Does anyone know if there are any changes from show to show, or is it completely static?

it's pretty static, the encores are always the same. sometimes they'll play let there be love instead of love like a bomb or the meaning of soul. acquiesce made one appearance i think. otherwise they are playing the same stuff each show.

Oh man, that would be a treat if they play it tomorrow. I missed them on their last tour, since Boston was one of the shows they dropped due to the car crash.

Dont worry... Oasis is British and how they do in England is what matters for them, we are just the lucky ones in America that appreciate one of the best rock bands!

JUST HANGING OUT ?
DID Mary-Kate Olsen have a little too much fun partying with Brit poppers Oasis after their Garden gig the other night? "When she came out of Oasis' dressing room, she almost crashed into me," our spy reports. "Her big bodyguard had her by the arms ... She was in rough shape." The bite-sized billionaire, clad in a KISS shirt, denim skirt and cowboy boots, was half-carried into the service elevator and off to the VIP bathroom. "Whatever the implication is, it's ridiculous," Olsen's rep assures us. "She was just hanging out with the band. Nothing went on whatsoever."
